Music CD's are soon becoming extinct... - Page 3

That would drive me crazy.  Can you buy used off of eBay or does shipping kill that route?

Most decent classical CDs are not available online.

Unfortunately, they don't pop up very often as the music is foreign and not very popular, so when they do pop up on ebay, silly prices & it's still overseas.

I'm not too sure how to describe it but it's amateur/indie(?) works that are sold at conventions/meets by the artists themselves. Which means I need to get someone to go there to buy them and ship them back here. On the plus side, I get an autographed CD every now and then, and that kind of makes up for it.

Maybe not in Australia, but I find an amazing amount of high quality classical on line and in stores here in the US.

I searched them up even in US online stores and find very little of them. Btw, I always purchase CDs from the US. It seems to be the less expensive route. :)

I feel that the CD is hear to stay because of its ability to contain high quality sound.  Vinyl is still around because people enjoy the medium.  You don't see this with cassette tapes or 8 tracks.  I think the medium will definitely evolve and the role that CDs play will change but I don't see them disappearing unless something major happens.  What that would be, I can not predict.

@Merck - The ability to download .FLAC for a fraction of the price? (or free, if you don't mind illegal downloads).

What about collectors or people that like physical medium. There will always be a market in my opinion.

My thoughts exactly.  I prefer to download .flac over owning a CD so long as I have a good backup system in place.  It would be extremely expensive right now for my hard drive to fail but I do have a lot of CDs stored somewhere.  I just try to keep two hard drives available with one of them as a backup of the other.

This made me think of my roommate freshman year of college.  He didn't have a stereo and he was a big Jimmy Buffet fan.  He had every Jimmy Buffet album on LP, cassette and 8-track so he'd be guaranteed to be able to playing on any roommates stereo.

Good riddance to 8-track.  It was a miserable format.

and soon, Spotify makes iTunes extinct.. and so on...

I don't see that happening soon.  You don't buy from Spotify.  I'm sure people said FM was going to kill LPs.  Some people will be fine with renting from Spotify but a lot of people will still want to buy what they like.  Quite a few of the CDs I've bought over the last few months aren't available from either.

Just because they are not on Spotify does not mean they cannot be downloaded? :-)

Are there any streaming services that allow a certain number of permanent downloads every month, that stay on your hard drive even after you cancel? That's something I would go for. I need to feel like I own something.

Most of the Zappa catalog is not available for legal download anywhere.  I won't download illegally.  I did buy the new Cowboy Junkies album as a lossless download directly from the band.  Great album BTW.
