Need recommendations: Safe, cheap accomodation in New York (Preferably Manhattan)

Hi all,

I would be visiting NYC as a tourist for 10 days with 2 other friends. I would like to have some recommendations on cheap accomodation in NYC, in a safe neighbourhood (preferably hotels, though we are open to hostels) that cost no more than USD 115 a night. If the location's in a safe area of Manhattan that would be great! (We are students, by the way, hence the shoestring budget)

Would appreciate help from Head-Fiers and the expert of New Yorkers here!

Thanks!

When I'm looking for hotels I find websites like tripadvisor or hotelscombined are useful.

It's been a few years since I've been to NY, but $115 a night sounds incredibly cheap.  If you find something that cheap, I'm going to guess it won't be in a good neighborhood.  That's the type of prices I got going there the month after 9/11. Another thing you have to worry about in cheap hotels in any big cities these days is bed bugs.

I second looking on tripadvisor.  You might have to stay farther out and take the subway into town, although that doesn't work all that well here in DC.

Another option to look at is couch surfing.

I'd imagine only a hostel would be anywhere that cheap. The average rate for hotels pretty much everywhere in Manhattan is at least ~$275-$300/night - and those are the cheapest hotels, which tend to be in either the Midtown or Chelsea districts (both of which are relatively safe, as they're big tourist areas).

You might be able to find cheaper accommodations near one of the colleges or universities like NYU or Columbia. Or, New Jersey if you don't mind not being in the city.

Btw, I don't live in NYC but I've traveled there several times (always for fun, never business).
