new to speakers without amps - Page 2

Definately check out the old amp with the speakers first. I think one of my best purchases this year is a 70's era Marantz, sounds wonderful, I may even like it better than my current model near top of the line Marantz amp.

DJ, I'm considering getting it as well, and also have a smaller room. I've read somewhere else that it can be too much for a small room. Would be curious to hear what you think. Thanks!

I definitely love the speaker. However, it's true that it is capably loud. I hardly ever put the sub's volume knob above about 1/4th to 1/3rd with my computer on a moderate volume level; otherwise, things start to rattle like my overhead light. My roommates haven't had a problem, but then we aren't the quietest group. If you have quiet roommates then I could see this speaker bothering them.

That said, I'm still glad that I bought it, and occasionally I've played it quite loud and it performs well. Also, it does not fall off like some other speakers at lower volume levels (it still produces quality tones even at low volume levels). It also has a bit of a noticeable sweet spot around 35Hz (which I think the box is tuned to).

Please take my opinion with a grain of salt because this is the first high-quality sub that I've owned, so I don't have much to compare it to besides my 8-inch sub from my 10-year old Logitech system. You might want to consider the smaller Energy S10.3 that Trog suggested earlier in the thread (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16882269026). But since I haven't owned the Energy S10.3, I can't say how it compares. The PSW505 is a good buy for price/power, but it certainly does move a lot of air.

Hope this helps!
