Headphones: Break and Replace

Hey everyone! I'm trying to do some research on whether or not you think headphones break/burn out easily.  If you have any sources, please reply back, I'm trying to do a project with my class and if I can get this all set and done, we will possibly be designing our own headphones!  Thank you!

Break/burn out ? People spend more than 1000s of hours on their headphones and they seem fine. Although drivers can easily be broken by poking it with your finger. It should depend on the material you use to make them. Theres a lot of DIY electrostats around.

I just mean in general, most people I know, their headphones break easily, maybe it's mistreated or something, but I just need any information that may cause it, it the case is otherwise.

It probably depends on the type of headphone (cheaper ones tend not to be well-made) and the treatment tossing in bags, rolling over, stepping on.

'For example, the Skullcandy Aviators that I tried were pretty flimsy next to something like a Shure 440 and I could see them breaking pretty easily even if you babied them.

On the other hand you can take a pair of phones that are built like a tank and break them if you're careless.

Theres many ways of breaking a headphone, although the drivers breaking is one of the least likely since they are normally inside the cups. Cables disconnecting and headband breaking is the most common cause IMO

Improper care of headphones is probably the most common way they would break.  I guess that, along with build quality would be at least two reasons why more expensive headphones break less.  I know that if I spend a lot of money on something, I will be taking damn good care of it.
