Best portable amp for Beyer DT 1350s?

I've been researching portable amps for these new DT 1350 cans (80 ohms) for weeks now.  Driving them directly from my iPod Classic with lossless files just isn't cutting it fidelity-wise.  My budget is $500 max.

Was all set to buy a RSA P-51 Mustang, but when I contacted Ray he suggested The Protector or SR-71A Blackbird instead.  No reason given, but I assume Ray thinks the P-51 will not drive the DT 1350s adequately.

Have decided I want an amp with rechargable batteries, so that eliminates the SR-71A which uses two 9V batteries that have to be removed to be recharged.  The Protector fits the battery bill, but I've read this review that says balanced amps don't sound as good as unbalance amps with unbalanced headphones (which is all I have).    This same review says the P-51 drives 300 ohm Sennheiser HD-650s just fine.  So, Ray's response confuses me.

Anyone have experience driving Beyer DT 1350s with a RSA P-51?  Any other amp recommendations for these cans?

The lack of help offered in Head-Fi sometimes amazes me.  The last two threads I've originated asking for input on portable headphones and portable amps got a whopping zero responses.  This would never happen on AudioKarma.org.  Guess I'm on my own.........

Look forward to hearing how you like the combo.

How much trouble is it to change the batteries in the SR-71A?

I don't find it troublesome at all, the only concern is that the caps could be lost.

I have not heard the Dt-1350s but am very close to buying a pair.  As for an amp to pair with it, I would get in line for the new JDS labs c421.  I have heard the prototype which will be the same as the production and it worked really well with my Shure 840s.  The amp's designer carries around Beyer 880s 250 ohm with him and uses the amp.

This amp is very good sounding and will compete with even some much more expensive amps like the Ray Samuels or the ALO.

Hope this is helpful.

I use the PB-2 with the 1350's. I didn't buy the amp specifically for these Beyers, but it works well. I wasn't in love with the slightly darker comparable RSA amp when I tried it, so I, and my wallet, were pleased to go the iBasso route. I have a smaller amp and a DAC of theirs and would recommend their stuff without reservation. I also like being able to roll the op-amp and had HiFlight hooked me up with some op-amps that play very well with the clear detail of the 1350s.

They fit each other well...but when I swapped iPod to some better sources they sound even better

BTW DT1350s are pretty forgiving to the sources, compared with HD25-1s

I haven't bought any portable amp yet.  But, if I do a Ray Samuels amp is definitely the way I'll go.  Probably "The Protector".

Thanks !

Ray Samuel recommend the Protector or the SR-71A for this headphone.

I can confirm that the SR-71A is very simpatico with the 1350's.  The best sound I have managed with them is HP-P1 & SR-71A, although they still sound sweet when using the Fostex by itself.  If you wind up with this amp I suggest you invest in Tysonic low discharge rechargeable batteries.
