Wasn't sure what to expect out of the box because of all the mixed reviews. By mixed you would see 9 that love and totally swear by Ultrasone but then there was always one troll hating on em and...
This is a review of a pair of free IEM's I recieved from DUNU as part of a give away contest they recently held here on Head-fi.
When I recieved my package the first thing I notices was...
Best closed headphones I had heard - very flat response, almost no midrange distortion, very easy to drive (good for portable), good soundstage (definately better than K240), good isolation, but...
Overall excellent buds, very good sound quality, especially for their price, the medium set of tips fits exactly in my ears and provides a near perfect seal. Bass is very detailed, but not...
Hey fearless...believe it or not, I actually had my eye on the 540 before reading a lot about bad tube/Denon synergy. What kind of music do you listen to?
Wow that is a hard question lol......I guess a mix of things from Radiohead to Classical to R &B (Hip Hop). I love the 540, I try new tubes in it all of the time and just changes the sound so much.
I know what you mean about the music types...as stated in the op, I primarily listen to progmetal so speed/dynamics are concerns (I know tube amps tend to be a little on the 'slower' side). How would you say the 540 holds up there?
Also, have to ask...headphone output is on the back of the unit...I suppose it would only be a minor annoyance but still, who thought that was a good idea?
Yeah it is in the back, but at the quailty you get for the price it is a minor annoyance. As far as being slow, I would say I do not recconize that characteristic at all with the Denons. I have an older Jasmine that does not mesh with the Denons at all but sounds golden with my Grados and my Beyers. The jack is in the back because they use the same casing as the phono amp.
Ah I suppose that makes sense after looking at both the headamp and the phono. Man it sucks not being able to head to a hifi shop and take a listen to some different amps for myself. So far I've heard nearly 100% positive reviews for the 540/Matrix M-Stage/Burson 160 (granted the 160 is quite a bit more expensive)...I suppose all 3 would be an option........
Did something a little unexpected last night...purchased a Meier Corda Opera amp/DAC from a fellow Head-Fier in the classifieds. If anyone would be at all interested in my initial impressions, check this thread:
