AKG K 242 HD

Thread Starter

hi,

i'd like some advice on buying headphones (like many people here ;) )

i was looking for some nice headphones around 110 euros, the AKG K 242 HD are in that price and i saw some reviews witch said it was a really good headphone.

'm currently on the HD201 (yeah , the 17 euro ones) .. and i sometimes use my dad's old MB Quart PQ 240 (witch sounds a lot better than the 201)

(yeah 'm 14 years old and love music, and my father is an audiophile.. so 'm used to good sound and i want more than my 201's (: )

btw, 'm totally not a basshead or something like that :P

so my question is, is there someone who has experience with the K 242 HD's? is there something i should know about them? are there any portable amps you recommend? (because 'm not a big fan of the ipod's sound quality, and i want to use them on long trips in the car or bus or something either)

Thanks!

Ivar.

They're really balanced and flat. Definitely sound better than the UE triplefis I have , with a pretty wide soundstage for the money.  Probably won't use it on-the-go though, rather large, but thats probably just me. They also leak sound rather badly. If you want similar sound quality but want to avoid the sound leakage the 272 HDs are pretty much the same, closed-back should be the only difference off the top of my head.

I have very little sound leakage with my k240S....same drivers as k242HD. I have to play them at almost ear splitting volume to hear much coming out the rear of them.

The 272 have much less bass presence than the 240/242. I would no longer qualify them as a balanced headphone.

Sound leakage, compared with other open headphones, is not bad at all on the 240 series. But certainly, very different compared to IEMs. :)

If you do not specifically need the isolation, I always recommend the 240/242 over the 271/272

You will not need a portable amp with these, but if you choose to add one - there are many good options - really that would come down to price, and would be worth a dedicated thread in the portable headphone amp subforum.
