I'm surprised how many people failed to read the OP's requirements. K701 is a open, detailed headphone, wholly inadequate bass wise for OP's friend. He also stated no amp and driven by an iPod. Ditto. >.<

 

 

I'm going to go with recommending the AiAiAi TMA-1's. If your friend digs the style then all the better. If not then try recommending a second hand Pro 900 or a new 580. All else fails, try a Sony XB1000.
