Modding the IBasso T3D

I've just changed the opamp on my T3D, for the second time.

This thread is to keep a record of it, in case anyone else is into modding. I find others' experiences useful, so here goes.

Currently, I'm using AD8066, paired with my Etymotics ER-4S.

Absolutely fantastic.

The bass is very clean and with impact. And there is no fatigue.

The sound changes (dare I use the word burn-in in fear of those who'd raise crosses and start bombarding me?) in the first few hours have settled. Btw: those changes are due to the soldering job and happen most every time. It is not the mechanical burn-in of diaphragms, etc.

Previously, I'd put in an AD8656 paired with my Shure SE530 s. That was also great, but the Etys did not sound as good with the 8656 as they now do with the 8066. And there is more detail with the 8066.

Anyone else who's done this? Any recommendations?

The source I'm using is iAudio7, bass cranked up. This setup sounds better than the one with the Shures.

hey man, great thread.. btw, are you sure that's not signal distortion you're hearing?

ad8066 requires a minimum of 5v single supply while t3d can only supply 3.7v, and almost down to 3v when the battery is out of charge. in that case, i think the ad8066 will obviously distort

however, i'm looking forward to your next mod, get rid of the new toy syndrome, and compare it to other branded portable amps when you have the time smily_headphones1.gif

LOL!

Yes, I did charge the unit after the mod. However, it was a pretty quick charge, and I doubt it was less than half full before that. But you could be right, too.

This rig, with the bass cranked up as I did it, is my best Ety 4 rig yet. Had my IBasso D10 stolen, so no comparisons there, and none with the Shures, either, since they went with the D10.

Finally a small enough setup to do the Etys justice.

You know, I tried to, but they'd scraped off the markings.

From what I can tell through my trials with the two other opamps, it is a way more boring, darker, less detailed, poor bass response, (probably) el cheapo opamp. And yet, the amp did sound ok with it, too.

However, I am sure it has very low Iq (power drain when idle), which helps with battery life. And since battery life is an important selling point for most, I cannot say I resent them for this.

I really would like to try the other two, but I am afraid I might be reaching the point where a few more desolderings will result in one or more pads coming off.

I've had this happen when I was modding my SR71. Luckily, it was a NC lead, so no problems there. Otherwise, I'd have to be jumpering. :-)

So, since my trials are limited in number, could you tell me something about the sound signatures of the two chips you recommended?

Thanks.

actually i have no idea what i was recommending, i was just looking for the only suitable voltage supply range. lol

people rarely care about low voltage opamp because they usually swap opamps for amps with supply voltage more than 7V. even ibasso with rollable opamp has at least 7.4V supply
