Frankenspiel FS-1 portable desktop speakers. A2's killers?

I was browsing What Hi-Fi at a supermarket where the magazine gives a rave review to these speakers. in fact they win the award for best budget desktop speakers 2011.

I was wondering if anybody has heard them, or knows more about these Frankenspiel's. I think the company is called SoundScience by Antec.

They don't look anywhere close to as sexy as my A2s.

But then again my pair of black A2s were slightly overpriced ($210) and their sound is subpar. They had mufled highs which lacked extension. The mids are smooth and forward, but they also lack bass. Bass is good for such a small sized speaker but it emphasizes mid/high bass.

So I expect a better sound than my A2s.

The 80-20000 Hz range with a -6 dB limits tells us everything we need to know.

Not to mention that it's USB powered.

In short, it's not an A2 killer

I'd agree. besides, I'd take what "What Hi-Fi" reviews with a large pinch of salt. they gave the AKG 450 best portable on-ear (£50 - £150) award 2011. what? how do they expect me to take what they say anywhere seriously. to be fair at least there were no Monster Beat's hp's in the award list.

according to their website these should be at Apple store soon, so I might get a chance to hear them.

I mostly see it as a lifestyle object that manages to remain ok, sort of like the B&W P5 headphones, stylish (or not), sounds meh for the price but still ok.

Hey guys

I think you are missing a key point here .... the Frankenspiels are USB Driven !!!!  No external power supply ....  hence PORTABLE.  I don't think your A2s are gonna work in the middle of a field .......  wink_face.gif

I own both the AudioEngine A2's and the Frankenspiel FS-1 speakers. The former remain on my desktop and remain stalwarts of my office music system. The latter - Frankenspiel FS-1 - are my go-to portable speaker solution. You are not going to find a better USB powered speaker solution which can fill a room with sound. I connected my Macbook Air to my Nu-Force UDac-2 and played my lossless 24 bit 96 kHz tracks to the pleasure of my friends and myself. Both of my Steely Dan lossless albums - Aja and Gaucho - sounded superb given the system upon which the sound was being reproduced.
