Philips Fidelio L1 (upcoming headphone) - Page 15

You might want to check out my review: http://www.head-fi.org/t/591929/philips-fidelio-l1-review-and-appreciation-updated

I also had the ZX700 and I think the L1 is easily two classes above. I saw a comment by Tyll somewhere saying they are on par, which made my jaw drop.

IMO, the Sony has far inferior resolution, much narrower soundstage, less controlled bass and obviously not the same build quality and materials.

The L1 will sound bigger because it has more bass and a bigger soundstage. You will have to try out if you like that.

@Elitist: Considering Sennheiser did not change a lot, just improved materials and added iDevice support, the decision will be very easy to handle: comfort VS isolation.

I've used my L1 on four business trips already. That's 48 hours train rides alone and I was very happy to have the Philips. Isolation is enough to enjoy music, but it let's enough through as to not lose awareness. I would not use it on a plane, though.

I posted this in the other Fidelio thread but this one seems more active:

I'm curious as to how these compare with Sony Z1000s (ZX1000?). However I think it's pretty unlikely that anyone has used both of these somewhat unknown headphones, so I'm just asking in the dark here.

My two biggest issues right now with the ZX700's is they don't have fat enough earpads (stuck some tissues underneath for now) and I swear I can hear distortion in the mids. Especially when it gets busy in the mix.

I agree with the thin pads! Sometimes the highs get too high and fatiguing.

He was referring to the Phillips Stretch, not the L1.

I'd take the Amperior for travel. Better sound and isolation by a mild margin.

Hey Tyll, how much of an improvement are the Amperior vs the HD25-1 ii? are they worth the extra $$?

I have the Stretch, it is not the new line. It actually sounds best with ipod; it does not have the high treble and low bass, thus why it does not tire my ear out.  For $40 ~ $50, they are not bad; they sometimes on-sales for $30, so just wait for it.

Tyll's L1 measurement suggests that L1s need similar power as Lcd2s to reach 90db, which is a lot more than normal portable headphones. How come?

I suspect he is taking this measurement at a single point of 1khz, since that is where he measured impedance. If so that happens to be where the LCD-2 's frequency response maxes out. The L1 has a dip of about -2.5 db at 1000hz on the other hand. Hopefully he can answer to confirm this.

^ Thanks. That seems to make sense with many headphones like Sen HD 600, AKG K701, Beyer T1, CAL, Philips Downtown.

However, if you look at Sony MDR-XB700s' FR (which have big dip at 1khz) and their required power to reach 90 db (which is a bit less than Philips L1s).........

If Tyll's power requirement data (Vrms or mw required for 90 db) is taken only at 1khz, then it does not really say anything about efficiency or suggest the "easy-to-drive-by-portable source" factor. I thought the "easy-to-drive-by-portable source" factor is determined by sensitivity and impedance.

L1s are rated at 105 db per ? and 26 ohm, if that per ? is 105 db per mw then it is quite sensitive; but if that per ? is 105 db per v then it is more like AKG K701 (edit: which means I would skip them for portable use).

Could not resist anymore and took the plunge. Should get them in two days.  L3000.gif

I don't know how Tyll measures for sure. The L1 comes with an iphone compatible cord, so it should be pretty easy to drive though.
