Classical Music Lovers: What is your favorite dynamic for strings, whether solos or quartets?

Thread Starter

I've tried lots of balanced armatures. Some of them do strings really well, particularly the ER4P and Westone 4, though the Westone 2 isn't bad. Personally, I didn't like the SE535 and UM3X w/ violins and cellos, nor baroque music.

What is your favorite dynamic for string solos or quartets and why? Imo, strings are so demanding to reproduce really well, especially the timber. I'm curious what one you all think is the best from your experience! Even if you're not a classical music lover, some of you will still have some great advice!

Haven't heard many dynamics myself, but W4 was really really good with strings, iirc.

Guys I think he's asking for dynamic phones.

MTPCs ( a little bit) and Monster Miles Davis Tributes (more) and  Monster Miles Davis Trumpets ( a lot more). I only actually own the Pro Coppers, but the Miles Davis series, when I tried them, really blew me away.

 Surprisingly, all monster products.

RE272, EX1000, EX7550, FX700, HJE900 and IE7.

Both the Sony EX600 and EX1000 are fantastic for all kinds of classical and both have pretty amazing timbre. If you listen to mostly classical just get the EX600, you won't regret it.

I have to disagree with many opinions so far.

I didn't find the timbre of the EX600 to be anything special. It sounded kinda hollow and tinny.

The IE8 sounds dark and thus shifts the whole timbre to a weird and uncomfortable presentation.

The W4 lacks saturation and contrast (analogy to pictures) and doesn't have enough body compared to dynamics.

The SE535 also lacks body and weight. (Of course, it's a BA.)

The title "best earphone for strings" definitely goes to FX700 of what I've heard so far. If you're on a budget, the HJE900 will do.

It seems like you're confusing sound-sig with timbre.confused.gif I could be wrong of course, just the way it seems. Most people seem to concur that the realism of the instruments on the EX600 is great. To each his own, however.

No, I'm not confusing natural sound with recessed mids. I auditioned James EX600 for many days and there is an obvious dip in the highs which make them sound hollow or tinny. Bass has a nice body, but it lacks texture for strings.

I think the EX600 is a good all-rounder, but it is easily outperformed by the HJE900 for timbre - and timbre only!

I would say re272. I do like strings on my w4, but the laidback treble is really a dealbreaker for me.

The fx700 has awesome timbre and presentation, but to me is a bit too edgy and bassy. I don't practicularly enjoy a v-shaped sound for strings.

I would say try out re272s, they are surprisingly good.

UE TF10! Like it for my classical music. Feel that the soundstage of the orchestra seem bigger and fuller. For string wise, is quite hard to find a earphone that can reproduce the sound nice.

VSonic GR07 works very well for strings in my opinion, more so than the Monster Turbin Pro Copper in my opinion, and also better then the Sennheiser IE8.

Ugh, the only dynamic I like for this genre is the GR07, otherwise it's the GR10 from Grado, a BA...

GR07 is great for realism in portraying string buts IMO lacks just a bit of detail at the high end for example the sharpness or grit of the bow sliding against the strings. Or the piercing clarity of a high note. The FX700 is better with these details to my ears because of the clearer treble but the bass is a bit too pronounced without a looser fit.
