I think it will always come down to personal tastes though.  I've borrowed some D7000's from a local head-fi'er and have been listening to them through my home set up the past two nights and do find the D7000's are more neutral and detailed in the higher frequency.  However, I find myself somewhat bored with them after a little while as the music doesn't seem as lively to me.  Currently not getting as good a fit with them as I could due to some circumstances, but I can't see that improving what I'm missing from listening to HD650's or my W1000X.

As Shane says, scratch the itch and see if it sticks around or goes away.  With a good return policy or even decent secondary market here, it's a little too easy to just go through and try a few headphones until you find one pleasing to your ears.

Hey Daigo,

You have a very interesting take on the D7000s, I may think that your setup may be influencing the sound quite a bit because one thing I have never heard about the D7000s (especially when compared to the HD650s) is boring/ not lively.. Just looking at their frequency response they have more treble and bass presence than the HD650s and that alone should add some life to otherwise overly neutral or veiled cans.

Like you said at the end of the day each person has his/her own preference but your comments made me curious about your setup. What kind of dac and amp are you using?

I've got to go with Ahzari here. I've never thought of the D7k as boring either. So, my friend, what say you listen to my D7k's on Saturday, I'll listen to what you bring, and we'll do a quick check of each others sanity. wink_face.gif

Last year when I visited your rig, I listened to what you had and it was spectacular (of course the vinyl source helped... heh, heh...).

But of course I agree that it all comes down to personal tastes. See you soon.

I have to admit, it might just be a case of me having listened to my HD650's too much over the past couple of years on this set up, though the W1000X has been getting all my head time since I picked it up.  You might have me mixed up with Horio, who brought the vinyl source last year (which was excellent).  My set up was briefly set up by someone to get a quick listen when he tracked me down to ask me for it.  I did enjoy your D7000 out of your Benchmark DAC1 at the meet last year, shane55.

I use a gamma-2 to Elekit TU-882AS, which I think is a very warm amp, so it might not be ideal with a can like the D7000.  I had briefly owned a pair of D7000 about a year and a half ago, but returned it after a week for various reasons.  You're welcome to come try out my set up at the coming meet.  Looking forward to trying some of the many different gear people plan to bring!

Totally agree with you, but sometimes I get tangled up in my cords and the RS220s being a possible wireless HD650 would be great for me... for watching movies/tv I feel like warmer cans tend to do movies better.

At least you gave 'em a chance. I've seen headphones get da boot here on HF with as little as 20-25 hours! eek.gif

I know they are supposed to sound pretty warm and that they are open phones while the Denons are closed... I guess the big question is are the sound signatures different enough to merit having both of them and enjoying them for different genres or are they both just all around good headphones. I have read a comparison thread but still couldn't get a good consensus if any headfi'ers have a good observation it would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Absolutely! They are my 2 favorite phones by far. If your a fan of the d7000 sound sig, then I'm sure you'll love the senns. They are certainly different enough to own both though IMO. The senns are less bassy - but still warm and musical. They are obviously much more open sounding and give a great 3D, holographic image, even more so than the denons. This all depends on synergy of course. Some amps prefer the denons, other ones prefer the senns.

As far as music, I find the denons are definitely the best for fun modern music like pop ie top 40 and the senns, although very universal, are best with more acoustic, classical, Jazz, Indie ie Jack johnson.

Also I find the senns are by far the most comfortable can I have ever owned and scale beautifully.

I may be guilty of this as I've only listened to the borrowed pair of D7000 for about 5-6 hours over the past couple of days, and maybe 30-40 hours total previously.  Maybe my impressions will change as I get used to them, though I may only have a pair for another week or so depending on when the head-fier I borrowed them from is ready to exchange our headphones back to each other.

GAAH!! I am soooooo sorry. What can I say, it's been a year and I'm obviously addle-brained. My most sincere apologies for mixing you up. And you remembered my setup... agh. How embarrassing. redface.gif  I owe you a beer.

No worries, your signature jogged my memory.  Other than ironbut's reel set up and with Doc's bottlehead amp set ups with the K1000 and with HD600's, I think I spent the most time listening to your D7000's.  I was really tempted to buy a pair again at the time as they sounded excellent out of the DAC1 with a computer as a source, but decided to buy a pair of customs instead.

@Ahzari:  Yeah, we're referring to last year's and this upcoming bay area head-fi meets.  Sorry for the thread jack!
