Weird...

My EPH-100's only came with one of each tip (except medium sized tips), wtf!?

Music is just ones and zeros, or electrical signals down a wire.

When I first recieved my pair I thought I only had one of each size because they place one side in the container and the other side in a plastic bag; kind of a weird setup.

I may have gotten a fake pair of these iems. I sold the "stock" tips to another Head-Fier, who found that they were very soft, and he was unable to get a seal. He confirmed that, while they look almost identical, they are not. I immediately refunded his money, and he was very cool about it.

Now, I need to determine if these are real or not. The best way I can think of is to test these with my TDK IE800s, which are comparable in quality, though different in sound signature. I am listening to some Miles Davis with my TDKs now out of my Fiio X3.

If anyone has any suggestions for how I can determine if they are real, please let me know. I want to be sure they are fake before I go to ebay to complain.

Thanks,

Shuto

I posted about a potentially fake pair I got last month: http://www.head-fi.org/t/577712/yamaha-eph-100/3525#post_10056873

The tips were indeed different, with the suspected fake pair being softer...didn't even think to mention that because I've been using different tips on these.

IEM is tip dependent ( so seal dependent)  and with the wrong tips, it changes the whole sound. Although they both look like silicon tips, the 'fake' feels very very flimsy which I think would prevent from getting good fit. I've seen people have problem with the fit, so apparently the problem could be the stock tips. It is a problem when my Yamaha EPH-100, which I have worn frequently for 1.5 years, could not fit to my ear when the fake tips were put, while the real ones don't.

What tips are you using modulor?

I am currently using the double flange tips from the LG Quadbeat...for whatever reason I get the best, most comfortable seal with them.  Have not tried any foam tips on these yet though.

I am now convinced the tips I got are fake.

I'm now trying to determine if the iems are fake too. My sound test so far has been inconclusive. These iems sound far better than my cheap Panasonic earbuds, but very close to my TDK IE800s.

The eph100 is getting discontinued, why would they bother to make fakes ...

It's not that much popular too.

It's popular with people who know about IEMs.

This is the thought process I used when I purchased them from an ebay seller. I figured it didn't make sense for anyone to make a fake version of these, since they have such a unique design-- small aluminum housings, large nozzle, proprietary ear tips, etc., and not extremely popular. They are popular on Head-Fi, but not "popular" like flagship iems from Sennheiser, Westone, UE, and other well-known names in the iem community.

However, I am fairly certain the tips are fake. It stands to reason, then, that the iems may be fake as well. I ordered a second pair from Amazon and will compare. This will:

1) Confirm or deny my suspicion.

2) Provide me with as conclusive evidence as possible if I need to go back to PayPal to dispute charges.

3) Provide the community here with some useful information.

This has been a learning lesson for me, as a new Head-Fi'er, but I hope to share this lesson with everyone else.

I'll have more information when my authentic yamahas arrive from Amazon.

Maybe they are genuine but Yamaha did a design change (new material, manufacturing process improvement, etc) without announcing it.

Wrong. Digital audio is ones and zeros... Analog is electricity down a wire.

Music is more than those.
