Yamaha EPH-100

So I have my GR07 back and, after getting reacclimated to the reduced mid-bass, I'll say that the GR07 is technically superior to the Yamaha. It has slightly more detail (maybe the detail is more apparent because of the increased clarity), drums and cymbals are just glorious which allows me to enjoy my acoustic pieces more, and it's not as 2d as I thought (has better forward projection and slightly wider ss). What is lacking though is the dynamic presentation of the yamahas. I have to crank the volume to get the same amount of "fun" as I did from the eph. I think EDM lovers will be better off with the eph, while Jazz, indie, etc fans that want instrument realism should stick with the GR07

Thanks eke :) I haven't heard the GR07 but this has the tenor of a very balanced assessment. I think the EPH definitely has a sound that does well with synthesized sounds; guitars don't have that bite or reach-out-and-grab-you crunchiness, but synth notes have a nice roundness and...I can't describe it but they definitely do something to this track that I haven't heard in any other headphone. It's the one "sound" of Infected Mushroom that I prefer on the Yams to my MS400:

Fantastic Gilly, I have a worm inside my brain. thx.

I could never hear this songs many times with iem's without hurt my brain, but now I hear that is a marvel.

Here we can see, how diferent and "good" is the EPH treble (neutral).

listen this....0 sibilance. :D

Talking about soundstage and Jazz in EPH (I dont think EPH is a 3D cavern not even near, but is very pleasure when is needed....for that would have a very sharp and air treble)

eke2k6 I'm sorry to read the fitting was so discomfortable for you with EPH100 as I got the impression you was really enjoying them otherwise.

As Gilly said your assessment seems like a fair reasoned one & it's good to hear that you are still able to enjoy the GR07's.

But I'm compelled to ask if the EPH100 fitting had not caused you such discomfort would you have been happy enough to live with it's shortcomings over the GR07 ?

I was told Eke to see if it was a faulty EPH, because I can't even create Vaccum seal with mine.

What I am most like is to have a very nice signature .... listen hours and hours and not get fatigued.....This is what has surprised me.

They're great iems. It's just that the GR07 provides greater enjoyment for my preferred genres. In the same fashion, another person will find them better suited to their needs than the GR07. Rock guitars on the Gr07 are as crunchy as pebbles on a beach, and drums are beautiful. I must admit that within the first few hours of getting the GR07 back, I kept shoving them deeper and deeper into my brain trying to squeeze out some extra mid-bass. My ears are used to them now though.

It wasn't the eph's fault. I have this problem with many other fully closed iems. The giant nozzle mounted driver didn't help much either...

I think you may want to try the GR07. It doesn't have the midbass amount you may be used to, but once you get used to it it will blow you away. I upgraded from the se215 too if that counts for anything.

There is brief comparison to e-Q7 by james444 earlier in thread that might help:

I have got in touch with the thread starter & he will paste links to impressions etc that i colated from the 70+ pages so far.

This links also show some of the comparisons covered - some more brief than others. Hopefully this will make navigating through the thread little easier.

In regards to the separation ability being equal between EPH100 & EX600 I'm little confused.

We have two owners of UM3X in this thread (Tienbasse, Miow) - a phone renowned for its separation ability, & both have said EPH100 has better separation. Before I bought the EPH100 I followed & read through the EX1000/EX600 thread & did not get any impressions of it having outstanding separation ability. Maybe someone else can shed more light on this.

On the matter of clarity. Could the EX600's greater clarity be attributed to its treble emphasis which tends to create an illusion of better clarity compared  to warmer phones such as EPH100 ?

To my ears the EPH100 has plenty of clarity - far more than IE7, but just not analytical levels which some may desire.

I have not heard the UM3X, but I have the W4 and to my ears these have better separation than the EPH-100. From everything I've read about the UM3X, I'd assume that they're about on par with the W4, but maybe music_4321 can chime in since he had both phones at the same time.

Anyway, as I see it, separation isn't an ability by itself, it's actually largely derived from detail resolution, clarity and speed. And of course clarity is closely related to a phone's sound signature and a warmer/darker phone will always struggle to keep up with a more balanced and brighter one in clarity. For example, if you flatten out the IE8's midbass hump with EQ, the improvement in clarity is striking, making them almost sound like a different (and better) phone imo. In my book the EPH-100 have good clarity for a rather warm, darkish and forgiving phone. That's mainly, because their bass peaks lower than the IE8's and thus doesn't affect the midrange as much. Plus, their microdriver is pretty fast and has decent detail resolution, that helps with clarity (and in turn, separation). But honestly, in the grand scheme of things the Yamahas don't strike me as having exceptional clarity or separation.

EPH is not only good with EDM, is much more.

It is a pleasure listen Pink Floyd, Amy W., Sade,....
basshead.gif
, even every kind of Jazz, is cool.

The aggressiveness and musicality (even not having exceptional clarity or separation, 3D efect) of the EPH, has been a big surprise.

On Metal the EPHs have better separation than the UM3X. On other genres, have not compared side by side as it is a pain to do so. But did it on Metal and there's a difference. I got a HUGE Metal collection and there's a few songs where even the UM3X are almost congesting. The EPHs render everything smoothly.

That's a result !

Happy to hear  that pack21 after all you have been through in getting your phones.

Best thing is if you already like them this much, wait till you get to 100+ hours

What will be noticed, more detail, separation, clarity, bass, treble?
