Creative Audigy 2 SB0240

I have a Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD7 motherboard with onboard Realtek sound via a ALC889 CODEC chip but what I wanted to know is would I hear a better quality sound if I installed my Creatice SB0240 Audigy 2 card ?  It is a bit old now and that is what is making me unsure.

Thanks

If u are adventurous there are drivers to mod Creative Audigy to X-Fi so drop down to Overclock.net hehe

Thanks for that advice. You didn't mention whether you thought that this sound card was a better quality than the on board though.

I thought that was only for Audigy SE cards, which are misnomers to begin with in that they don't have the EMU10k2 DSP that makes an Audigy card an Audigy. For that matter, the X-Fi XtremeAudio is basically an updated Audigy SE without the EMU20k1 or EMU20k2 DSPs that make X-Fi cards what they are. The OP's Audigy 2 appears to be a true EMU10k2 card, which is even better in that he could use the kX Project drivers if desired.

Anyway, motherboard audio jacks are prone to noise in my experience (easily noticeable with competent headphones, especially while moving the mouse or having disk activity running), while any half-decent sound card will have clean output. Maybe your motherboard's different, but that's certainly not the case on my GA-P35-DS3P.

SB240 should give better quality compared to onboard sound chips.

Don't go that way already suggested. For easiness sake stay in original drivers.

Thank you all for your help and comments, I found them informative. I think I will install the sound card even though it is about 7 - 8 years old. I just figured that as it was that age maybe the onboard sound might be better now. But as I am not an audiophile I am pleased to have your answers.

One more question if I may, does anyone know if there is any problem with installing this board with Windows 7 64 bit ?
