Electronic music starter needs suggestions...

Thread Starter

Hello, I've just started to listen to some electronic music, and I'd like to go deeper in that.

I've listened to some stuff by Klaus Schultze, the Tangerine Dream and the Chemical Brothers, and they suddently got my interest.

I shall warn you I come from the classical, pop and rock (yes, also prog) world though. Please don't go too much on the Hip-Hop or Rap side when suggesting.

I still cannot stand it yet. More instrumental and analog, or at least, analog-like stuff.

And... I don't know anything about house, trance, techno etc... Maybe you could give me some "examples"...

Thank you very much

If you come from classical, try this. It's a strange infusion of classical and electronic. It's japanese so it's borderline cheesy, but still great stuff.

Oh and about examples, the difference between house and techno:

House:

Techno:

Dance is a classification that doesn't say a lot imo. It's the more commercial side of electronic, but the fact that it's commercial doesn't say anything about the musical content.

Thank you very much for the answer! :)

Here it's night now so I really can't afford a "full" comment about them now, I'll just tell that I liked the third one the most, and the first one the least... beerchug.gif Just to address further suggestions wink_face.gif beyersmile.png Hoping to find some more tomorrow!!! Goodnight!

For someone who comes from listening to classical, Brandt Brauer Frick should be perfect.  Electronic mixed from orchestral instruments - it's a ton of fun to listen to.

If you like The Chemical Brothers, also try The Crystal Method (album: Vegas), The Prodigy (album: The Fat of the Land), and Underworld (album: Second Toughest in the Infants).

Other artists you might like: Hybrid (album: Wide Angle), Orbital (album: Orbital II aka "Brown Album"), and The Orb (album: Adventures Beyond The Ultraworld).

Thank you very much guys... I'll listen to everything during the day and these evening I'll give sought-after impressions!

But after a quick listen to some of your videos, I think I've been partially misunderstood!

Saying I come from classical does not mean I like more "unplugged-sounding" stuff. In fact it's the opposite! I want it just to sound electronic, samplings of "real" instruments are not for me, in this genre!

I'd glad to listen to some more stuff it is likely to pass in clubs, for instance... Something more quick! k701smile.gif thank you for your patience

Oh, man, please, no theremin! beerchug.gif  very interesting invention, but I don't think I could ever buy a Clara Rockmore's record...

What about old-school synths? beyersmile.png  Already have the ones in the starting post, and I'm looking for something else, or something more... new, kind of... new ways to exploit those sounds?

Immediately I think of Oneohtrix Point Never - Returnal. The first track on the album is a harsh wake up call but make it passed this and you're in for synth bliss. Excuse the non-videos.

His latest Replica is very different btw.

If you like Rock give Pendulum's Immersion album a shot. Great way to get into Drum n Bass. And of course Netsky and Logistics.

For something different give Kavinsky a try. He has a very 80s synth sound but is still making great music. In the same vein as Danger if you want to give him a shot, too.

Oh, and 'Vegas' is a legendary album. The Crystal Method nailed that one (favorite track: High Roller). Give that one a shot.

Armin Van Buuren - Mirage

Armin Van Buuren- Imagine

Armin van Buuren feat. Jan Vayne - Serenity

Aria - "Dido" (Armin van Buuren's Universal Religion Remix)

this is trance. lot of trance likes to add classical elements cause the whole point of trance is to hit a ''tranced state'' of euphoria. i'm going to add more of different genres in a sec. gonna split them up so it doesn't become one giant wall of crap. i listen to tons of electronic music ranging from all genres and sub genres. so i know a few.

Unknown Error - The Yearning

Hybrid - Finished Symphony

Venetian Snares - Szamár Madár

Venetian Snares - Hajnal

Venetian Snares-Kétsarkü Mozgalom

FORGOTTEN MOMENTS (OPHIDIANS REMIX)

Ophidian-Pegasus (HQ Vinyl rip)

last 2 you might not like in a way since they are one of the harder styles of electronic genres known industrial hardcore but i like Ophidian cause he's the only hardcore producer i know that adds a good flow of classical mixed with hardcore. he's one of my favorite hardcore producers. he tends to be a mixture of breakcore/hardcore/classical most of the time. other above is breakcore with Venetian snares. i'm surprise no one mentioned him here cause he's pretty popular and knows how to add complexity to classical compositions. the first one from Unknown Error is DnB(drum and bass) but not much people seem to know him. i really like the combination of the chinese instruments in a smooth beat the song does. Hybrid is a classic when comes to trance. i'll list more when i think of something. i know there is tons more.

i'll throw in some trip-hop/downtempo later
