Question about DIY interconnects and LODs

I see people make iPod LODs and 3.5mm-3.5mm interconnects with three wires, some with four wires, and some with even more!

 

Can I use three wires instead of four for DIY iPod LODs and also 3.5mm-3.5mm interconnects?

Also can you please explain to me what the differences are?

The first question is yes. The second is I don't know.

Three conductors is easiest way to conect L, R and ground. Four might be used as two twisted pairs - here two conductors carry ground, so are connected together at each connector.
