I never really cared about making sure when I ripped a mono cd that the file imported into iTunes was mono. Until, I ripped the great britpop song, "My White Bicycle" by Tomorrow. It's a mono master but they created a false stereo sound using different instruments in each channel. I think the reverse tape loop effect used in the song is the major problem... if you're not familiar with the song, check it out... it's great.
Using iTunes to rip a mono cd, you need to rip it as an .AIFF set to mono but ripping it as ALAC the file will show up as stereo in the song info palette. This created a really weird phasing sound when the song was ripped as stereo, so I choose to rip it as a mono .AIFF.
Since that added fuel to my OCD flame, I'm stuck in a situation. I have a mono .flac file ("A Quick One" by The Who), which cannot be imported into iTunes, obviously, but I want to convert it to ALAC or AIFF using XLD, but it doesn't appear the preferences allow you to select mono. When you do convert it will still show up as a stereo file in iTunes - even when you select "same as original" from the preferences window.
Any ideas on what I could be missing or an alternative app to convert? I'm on OSX Snow Leopard.
Thanks!
