First iPod introduced 10 years ago today.....

Thread Starter

Just reflecting on how far portable music has come since 2001.

Here is a video of the talk Steve Jobs gave 10 years ago, Oct 23, 2011 when he unveiled the first iPod:  http://youtu.be/kN0SVBCJqLs

I admit I did laugh at 4:15 when he so strongly emphasized how high quality 160kbps music is.

Newbie kit like that will never catch on biggrin.gif

The big problem, for me, is that I haven't seen the same big decrease in the price of Flash memory (per GB) as we did with hard drives.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_audio_formats

Vinyl - 1948

8-track - 1965

CD- 1982

SACD - 1999

AAC - 2001 (presumably with the iPod)

The head dude at Rotel announced in an interview recently that he considers Blu-Ray a dead format (not the first to say it, but interesting that an audio guy felt the need to mention it), and its not hard to put a large red line through many of the other technologies on the above page. Looks like I had better dash out and buy a bunch of microSD cards !  rolleyes.gif

Ironic that one of the oldest, vinyl, looks like outliving everything else on that page. Apple will progressively move music playing across to iOS and I believe the iPod wont be with us in 5 years time.

They should market a "10th Anniversary Edition" Classic with one of those new Toshiba 220GB drives.....assuming the situation with the flooding in Thailand doesn't affect supply.

And in reference to what estreeter said above

I hope you're wrong....I don't want my stuff in the cloud , I want it with me on my own device. (unless suddenly wireless is free everywhere and/or carriers stop charging exorbitant data rates.)

How about a phone with 128GB of flash that sells for 1/2 of the iPhone asking price ? That would be the point where I would move from a dedicated DAP.

The bluray is dead guy, well they want physical media dead yet arent giving us upgrades in storage, hd cloud aint gonna happen till the phone companies change their policy. No one wants another bill for monthly bandwidth. I know they want digital but they havent put in the proper changes, last couple years tech has been losing sight of the game
