but otherwise does it seem worth it?  I am getting a bit annoyed with my J3 and the touch features, as well as the lack of kick and snap.

Nope, I had the ck4 not too long ago, still missing it :'(

 

Interested in knowing the likelihood of rockbox on the new slim model.  My j3 is finally breaking, i guess I had beter decide on something soon

Ibasso DX100 FTW SWbf2cheater. The only other player I've heard that is also up there is the Studio V but the ibasso pretty much has no weaknessses other than battery life. The Sflo2 and Hifiman 601 sound good but no where near the ibasso and the Studio IMO.

its price is silly, not a chance I'd pay over 250 for a portable dap, I had the hm801 and tested the c4, both were rip offs and not portable, audiophiles recently have funny ideas of what portable means...no sir there is zero chance ill buy that new ibasso. 

Both the C4 and HM801 are worth it if you fit in the niche they cater for. They are nowhere perfect and their market is pretty small but I find that they both really do sound the money. By all counts the DX100 is at least comparable in sound and seems to be a much more finished product with only 2(3) weaknesses, size, battery life and price.

I guess it's not the most portable device but comparing it to my iphone4 in its otter box the DX100 is slightly thicker than it but has the same form factor. For a powerful 1 piece solution I find it quite portable. Not to mention its battery charge times are about half the time of the Sflo2 and Hifiman 601. Price is definitely a con but once I spent time with it I found it very much worth it's price. Keep in mind I would not have paid full price though. I always look for the discounts.

ya, I am not sugar coating my views anymore, they are too big most of the time and have piss poor user interfaces.  at these prices you should be getting the complete package, not just good internal hardware. 

anywho, I am scared of the new slim model, I'm sure the UI has not changed at all.  hifiman refuses to answer any of my emails, they must be upset with me because I've pmed them here multiple times, emailed support, and emailed fang directly five time this month, so I'm not sure if the new slim HM is going to benefit me or not.  As for the ibasso, I hoped they wouldn't price point that high, hoped that they would stay budget friendly.

Apart from physical size I think the old 601 and the new slim are identical in every aspect

If the original rickbox hm601 works on it, ill buy it

Aaaarrrgggh!!

 

I installed the RockBox software after waiting for a working version, and it now seems that I haven't installed the last one!

After putting the newest .rockbox folder on the SD card it will read 16-bit files, but not 24-bit (properly).

Now the computer won't recognize the DAP when I plug it in. Do I really have to do a hardware trick to make this work?

Please help those who can and know what to do

 

Which one did you install? What was the name of the file you downloaded? Have you gotten the drivers to install, my problem is that I can't get them to actually install, which is what would allow the computer to recognize it. Sorry for your troubles. 

 

I am not trying to rub this in your face, Lars, but I am listening to Slowhand (Clapton), on my freshly rockboxed 601, 24-bit 96khz, through some Grado PS-1000s. Mmmmm....sounds amazing. 

 

I do wish that a few more things worked, like the key lock, and I wish the first button press when the screen is off would just wake it up, instead of doing the action that it would do with the screen on. But there are some serious benefits. I mean, honestly, I think my favorite part is the ability to scroll so much more quickly through my muzak.

Mortalis released a new version of the Rockbox port but only for HM-801. USB DAC function now works.

Awesome. That's a lot better than the one that's all ?s. How do you install the damn drivers that came in the first package. They are .sys files, which aren't executable.
