very noobie DAC question @@!!

Thread Starter

when using a external DAC from ipod (or protable cd players etc.) do i need to link it up to a external amplifier in-order to create sound through headphones? or does the DAC already contain an amplifier?

how do i link a ipod to a DAC and with what kind of line? ( i know the 3.5mm jack in the ipod is the only available port so i know that will be used, but what about a DAC?)

Some DACs include amplifiers and some don't. Mine doesn't, so I bought an amp as well. Whatever you buy, it'll most likely be clearly defined in the specifications...if not, just search here or on google, or post a specific example and people can help you out.

Edit: Err...rereading your post. I think I misunderstood. Do you mean you want to hook up your iPod to an amp by line out? From what I understand, you can't bypass the DAC inside the iPod but you can amplify the signal from the onboard DAC through an external amp, but if someone knows better please do correct me. In that case, you'd just want to get an amp. Unfortunately, I don't have experience with external amps and iPods, but plenty of others here do!

Sorry for the hasty and not-so-helpful response ;)

what i wanted to know is, can i bypass the DAC inside the Ipod by using the 3.5mm jack port on the ipod, and will the external DAC produce better SQ, and do i need to an external amplifier (BTW is there a amplifier inside the ipod itself?)

if the above is possible, how do i do it? (which line connects to which port)

thanks for reading @@!!!

External DACs with the iPod are not a good idea IMHO. The DAC in the iPod doesn't leave a huge amount of room for improvement. The amplifier, on the other hand...

Most DACs will have line-level (ish) outputs, which then need an amplifier.

Hmmm... Someone else can correct me if I'm wrong but I don't believe you can bypass the DAC or internal amp of a standard iPod from the 3.5mm jack. The only exception to that is if you've iMod-ded your iPod in which case you can use the 3.5mm as line out into an external amp.

As for bypassing the iPod DAC via other means, yes you can. But you'll be doing it via the bottom connector. You'll be using something like a Fostex HP-P1, Cypherlabs Algorhythm Solo, or VentureCraft Go-DAP (designed for iPhones but with extension cables, work with iPad, iPod Touch, etc).

Or if you want to use the iPod's DAC but external amp, then U can also use the same bottom connector with a LOD (Line Out Dock) & hook it up to a portable Amp (Pico Slim, RSA SR-71, etc).

BTW, it depends on what iPod U have. The DACs I mentioned above seem to work well with current iPod, iPad, iPhones. But my old iPod Color Photo doesn't work with my HP-P1 nor Go-DAP. Having said that the older iPods used Wolfson DACs internally but the newer ones use Cirrus Logic. Supposedly Wolfson's the preferred DACs so the newer DACs mentioned above are targeting primarily users of current model iPods/iPads/iPhones who want something better than their internal Cirrus Logic's.

If you have the older iPod, maybe consider iMod-ding it??

What is going on here? rolleyes.gif

Yes, you can bypass the iPod internal DAC, but by connecting it to a "special" iPod docking station with a digital out.

The 1/8" stereo out is ONLY an analog out.

Unfortunately, few companies (such as Wadia and Onkyo)  produce iPod docks with the digital out!

The Onkyo is the least expensive I know.
