There's so many threads here i really don't know where to look but my issue is that I've had to resolder the stock cable of the AKG k701 at least four times already, its kind of annoying having to open them up to do this so im looking for some better quality cable and i have no idea what to get or where to get it.

i hear mogami and cardas alot but where do i buy them from (needs to ship to canada)? what kind of thickness should i be getting? what else beside the cable should i be getting?

I went here—http://www.ebay.com/itm/270764184839?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649 —for an AKG-702 cable. No comparison to the scrawny original cable from AKG. Better material, construction and first-class service...for a very reasonable price. This guy also made me a cable for the Sennheiser HD-800 that is excellent...again, for a great price.

Wouldn't bother with more expensive fare as the mumbo & jumbo scientific testimony of some advertisements is a disgrace.

if only i had the 702's that would be great but i have the 701's i sent him a message anyways but any other places i can go to make or buy a cable for AKG K701?

I like the slightly smaller diameter Mogami starquad cable, 2893. Lots of places carry it - I ordered mine from Performance Audio.

Connectors, I usually get from Markertek - unless I'm after something they don't carry. You will probably also want to get some shrink tubing.

You said you've resoldered yours several times - are they pulling away from the pins? or is something else going on?

bad solder job on their part they seem to break off from where they are soldered, had to resolder 3 of the 5 connections because of that, figured it'd be a good time to get a better quality cable and something shorter, because the length of stock cable is just unnecessary and gets in my way

Build your own, buy Mogami 2534 starquad microphone cable or 2893 mini-quad.  Strip the outer jacket and shielding (you don't really need them unless you use your headphones in a place brimming with interference) then sleeve the cable with whatever you want.  This also makes the cable lighter and a bit more flexible.  Paracord (pretty neat-looking) or Techflex nylon multifilament braid (example, it's the same as paracord, but thicker and more expandable) will be soft and pliable, real good for protecting the wires without sacrificing any flexibility.  Mogami wire is good purity copper, super easy to tin and solder properly and not terribly expensive (goes for $1.50USD or less per foot within the US).  Terminate it to a Neutrik NP3XB 1/4" plug.

Also, I would add a loose knot, or some hot glue, or extra shrink tube over a bead, or something - where the cables come in, for extra strain relief, so if the cable is tugged, it pulls on that, rather than solder joints.

Try the Homegrown Audio 26AWG wire, quad braid it and terminate it to a Neutrik or a DHC/ZXAC 1/4" plug, I really like this configuration on K701's... are you comfortable with doing a dual exit mod? I seem to like that over the single exit since you have to jam a bunch of wire through the headband which can get kinda cumbersome....

As for the y-connect, just use simple 3 into 1 shrink wrap over the y-connect.

If you buy the Mogami, you won't have to braid at all, it might be more economical, but I enjoy building the stuff haha...

Let us know what you do and PM me if you need any help :)

not comfortable drilling a hole into the other side to do a double exit although i have thought about it.

My vote goes for the Mogami 2893 mini quad as well. It is light, flexible, very durable and rather thin for a microphone cable.
