Headphone amp to use with Shure 440's and iPod?

I have a pair of Shure 440's that I mostly use to listen to music straight from my iPod, but I'm thinking about getting an portable amp to use with them.  First question, would an amp make that much of a difference in the sound quality?  Second, what are some suggestions of amps with this combo that don't change the sound signature too much and aren't much more than $50 or $60?

For most iPod models and the SRH440, the only way you'll get much of a difference in sound quality is to use something that's intentionally worse or otherwise imposes its own sound signature.  If you feel something sounds wrong or is lacking, check the music files, check any EQ settings, or ditch the headphones.

The only thing I've really noticed is some of the bass frequencies get a little distorted when turn the volume about halfway up or more.  I'm not really sure if an amp would fix this though because I've never used one.
