Help on speaker selection 2.0/2.1 ! Edifier R1600Τ/ M-Audio Studiophile Av40/ Audioengine 2

Hello guys,
I am a keen music listener and I enjoy listening to all kinds of music but especially jazz, classical and rock. I am searching for a new pair of speakers which I will connect to my desktop computer.

I have noticed that most pc speakers offer poor sound quality and I would love to go for something better.

For the time being I am looking into something relatively compact but I am also trying to look into bigger, 2.1 sound systems but no more than that.

My budget is relatively low, 70-110$ but at this period everyone struggles over money and I can't afford any more than that unfortunately.

I found some nice monitor speakers and I would love to hear your opinion:

1.Behringer Monitor MS16
2.Edifier R1600Τ
3.M-Audio Studiophile Av40
4.Audioengine 2
5.Cambridge Soundworks 2.1 (Used set at this time!)

I know they are not professional speakers, but as I said I am just a home user who just enjoys to listen to music!

Your help is much appreciated, thank you!

The Edifier R1600Τ is the best of that lot.

Just to make things even more challenging I have to add Edifier R2000T speakers to the list as well as Q Acoustics 2020, which if I am not mistaken is a pair so I will have to get some decent amp along with them!

The edifier's are excellent speakers for the money and the R2000T is the top of there range in monitors, the Q Acoustics 2020 are passive and not active speakers so will require an seperate amp which will bring the price up.

I want to add a correction here,my budget was referring to pounds, in US dollars that would be 110-190$.

Thank you for your reply JRG1990, I was wondering if you had listened to either R2000T or R1600T and if yes, what's your experience with them?

I would also be obliged if you could suggest me a cheap (30-50$) amp to go along with the Q acoustics.

I guess I will have to decide between the Edifiers,Q acoustics and A2's.

if you were referring to pounds then why the hell use the dollar symbol?

My bad, sorry!

The R1600t is a netruelish sounding speaker, it is quite detailed and clean sounding considering it's price, i'm not sure how it will compare to the q acoustics speakers from what i read the q acoustics speakers are very good.

This amp should drive them fine http://www.amazon.co.uk/Muse-M50-TPA3123-Stereo-Amplifier/dp/B005OSFWPQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1319546984&sr=8-1 .

To make things even more interesting, Amazon(U.S.) has a Gold Box offer on some set of M-Audio reference speakers that will begin at 10:00am Pacific Time (A little less than 4 hours).  Don't know yet what model, but you may want to check it out.

Hmm if u considering passive/amp and for near field/PC Audio hit a T-Amp and Roth Oli 10s?

Another option : use Gumtree (UK) to fish out used classic NAD amps on the cheap - these will also give warm sounding music paired with half decent speakers beerchug.gif

Edit NAD 3020 40 quid hehe

I think that's a nice idea, NAD 3020 looks great. I must confess that I feel kind of intimidated as I have never before been involved with audio hardware. I am quite frankly embarrassed to ask this but how can I connect the NAD to the computer audio jack?

You run a 3.5mm male to RCA red/white cable from your PC's line out to the back of the amp (mostly AUX)

I too recommend NADs receivers, even 18 years on, the NAD 716 is still running  well and packs major power for price. R2000t runs cheap, I found a distributor in the neighbouring country and I'm going to compare the R2000T and R1600T3 there. The T3 version packs a lot of bass I heard so I'm rather unsure about neutral sounding. The R2000T  looks pretty attractive though.
