Grado modders go Magnum - Page 197

More than likely...I haven't seen anything on full aluminium enclosures more recent than Rhydon's last round of Magnums he made (with the aluminium sleeves in the SR325is cups). Thought it might make a nice experiment to see how his latest driver does in an all-alu enclosure...

This all depends on the cup-maker though. I think he's going to leave me high and dry unfortunately.

I thought as the Magnum drivers moved away from the v.3 variant towards the v.4 - series, the design changes were applied to allow the drivers to perform better in other cup materials as opposed to be specific for aluminum cups?  I know older drivers are nearly impossible to come by, but locating a v.3 Magnum set might be better with those cups than the Magnum X drivers from Turbulent Labs.

[Just speculation though on my part]

Indeed...I have seen a couple of comments indicating that the X drivers are specifically designed for use with the Turbulent mahogany cups.

I could very well be on a fool's errand...wouldn't be my first biggrin.gif

Then again, the drivers are only $135.00 to get to you.  I've spent more than that on really bad decisions that I've made at times.  At least in trying the combo as your'e suggesting, I'd believe that it still has a level of success that awaits you.  Plus, didn't Rhydon actually coat the insides of the aluminum cups with a damping material?  Or, was I just dreaming it?  I think it's only been discussed a few times and I do recall taking note of what I had read in the event I found myself using some aluminum shells / cups, too.

I guess we wait and see biggrin.gif

*chuckle* I believe I have seen it referred to on the forums as "...taking one for the team..."

I know Grado talks about the their aluminium cups being made out of a specific alloy, chosen for its suitability for housing the drivers and handling resonance. I also saw blurb on Rhydon's site when it was still up to the same effect. I have also seen talk of Joe Grado upgrading HP1000 headphones for people by adding some sort of goop around the edge the mesh rests on...A personal correspondent even recommended lining the cups with cork.

I am not too sure how much experimenting I will be doing with the cups if they ever materialize, but there is a lot of room for trying I think. So in the spirit of the "Great Grado Experiment" thread, onward and upward!

My Magnus X's are all aluminum. Rhydon made some aluminum enclosures for a short period, but then stopped production. Sometimes when I hear people complaint about this or that regarding Magnums, I wonder if it's because mine are housed in aluminum. I can say that I had a pair of V4's in bloodwood and those couldn't touch my current aluminum X's. Could just be me, though!

That's promising! Might call the machinist today and harass him smily_headphones1.gif

Then again, most of us were led to believe that v.4 was the last change to be applied to the Magnum drivers.  At that point, it was felt that Rhydon had done all that was possible to tweak everything possible through the series of versions in this line.  Then, comes the Magum "X" from Turbulent Labs.  Is this driver really the "next" driver in the series after the v.4?  Or, is it a driver "of many colors and capabilities" and may have been a plan that Rhydon had on the shelf and decided to offer it as a custom driver for Turbulent Labs to sell?  Personally, I was quite a fan with the v.4 drivers with wooden cups.  I had a few pair that did quite well.

The way things are going though, I might be going woody again.

1.25" limba cups! :)

That would be fun, but not sure where I would source them. Only one cup maker makes what I would like to try in Limba, but last I checked he was out of commission sadly.

I emailed the ever-elusive machinist today and told him to cancel my order if he hasn't started work yet. It's been 4 weeks now...the dream must be relenquished.

A pair of Cabillas' cups would be nice too...*sigh*
