Hey folks, I just want to verify something. Does Rhydon do full Magnum builds anymore? The website suggests he does, but I thought I remember reading that he does not.

I think he doesn't do them anymore...

question about amping.

i have a 19j6 starving student and a PPA. i know the starving student has good synergy, and the PPA should be fine. but im wondering what people generally use for grados/magums. i was thinking about getting an asgard 2 or a lyr for my he-4, how would these do? also, do you guys generally prefer tube, ss, or hybrid?

For anyone interested I have a pair of Magnum V5s up for trade in the forum. The headband is an Onyx Manta from Turbulent Labs and the drivers are housed in limited edition Vibro classic cups (silver grille, bookmatched w/ matching rod stops).

They are, but it's just marker pen or something making them black, it comes off very easily. When installing in the cups a little silver mark was visible and I thought it looked better all silver so I removed it all. In any case the picture is of my Magnums before I got replacement drivers and the new ones are still all black.

Those look very nice, quick question if you don't mind. How'd you get the wood on the rods, at the tip?

The wooden rod stops were included with the Vibro cups because they were a one-off version. He said he only includes them with limited editions and some pre-orders because they're a hassle to make.

Those have sold now but I'm still very much in the Magnums camp - I have another set of drivers looking for a home now. I have everything except the cups.

Thanks for the reply, I've been trying to get a pair of rod blocks and gimbles from Martin Custom Audio for a while. I think I'll email him now.

Anybody out there throw any version of magnum drivers into the igrado set? An interesting "portable" that would be....

Not exactly, but I have used the iGrado cable in my latest 'cheap' magnum build in an old sr60 - seems to do the job very nicely.

hi,

i recently found out about these amazing magnum driver mod thing

i read that these drivers sound amazing

what's the one of the best custom cables for these drivers?

and as for the cups, do wood cups sound actually better than plastic cups like sr60?

or is it for the look?

i have twcu, twag, apuresound v2 on my possession at the moment

i see that turbulentlabs is selling their own cables on the website

are these any good/better than the cables i have?

I have a set from Martin. Honestly, I don't think they're worth it in retrospect. Don't get me wrong, they're great quality and as good as you'll be able to get, but they're pretty expensive if you think about it for  a purely aesthetic upgrade, which you may or may not be willing to throw down the change to do (I did it myself after all...). A note if you do choose to go for it, they are a big larger in radius than the standard Grado gimbals, so your cups will "move" left and right a little bit in the gimbals, if that makes sense. I custom made some filler blocks to account for this, but I suppose one or two washers on each side will also do the trick.

It also might be worth asking Rhydon himself if he still has any gimbals of his own in stock. I doubt he would, but the ones he made for the original Magnums were pretty stellar.
