Grado modders go Magnum - Page 169

hey guys. just bought a sr125 from a member here with the intention if incrementally converting them into a magnum. i plan to pick up the parts from turbulent labs. before i spend any more money, could you guys give me some advice? what headphone does the turbulent x driver sound most similar to in a wood cup? also, is anyone still making custom wood cups? i emailed martin custom audio and havent received a response yet. ill most likely get the vibro classic cups, but i would like to make sure its going to meet my sonic expectations. any advice?

I have heard the sound signature compared that of a ps500, but I have personally heard neither, so take that with a grain of salt :)

im currently talking with martin about a set of cups.

also, i just got my 125's and find them very bright. i generally like bright headphones (my main cans are hifiman he-4) but these are too much at the moment. does anyone know if the magnums will be less bright? will wooden cups possibly tame the highs? if this is how the magnums sound im thinking i should cut my losses now.

The overall sound signature is more similar than it is different.

There are some mods you can do to increase bass. Read the threads if interested.

Wood cups may help, especially if they have larger air chambers.

Different pads can also change the sound.

i would try another pair of Grados or Magnums if possible (try not buy) before giving up.

I found my 225i were slightly tamed (very slightly) when I put them in a pair of Vibro cups. Not sure if 125i are not inherently brighter than the 225i already...

The Magnums are definitely warmer than anything I have heard from Grado.

i do enjoy the sound of the 125s and am glad the magums will not be much different, hopefully just better. im thinking that if i put a set together and dont like them, i can just sell them. a bit more bass would be nice, but just to make the sound sig a bit thicker. i might as well give them a shot.

dont think i want to commit to a commissioned set of cups from martin until i know i like the magnum sound though.

I have a request, if someone with a lathe has the time and some spare wood to do it: 2 sets of rings of a dark wood to replace the plastic "The Prestige Series Grado Labs" rings in the cups of my 325- and MS2-based Magnums.  Someone had agreed to do this for me but has stopped replying to emails. I'll happily pay for postage and the wood.

Be patient waiting for a reply, he gets a lot of mails, took a while to reply to me also.

If you are going to do wooden rings, you need to make up some matching wooden buttons, IMO.

turbulent labs didn't send me any double sided tape, what do u guys use to connect the driver to the air chambers.

It's hard to say without actually hearing your 125's. What I can say is the SR125i I heard was warmer sounding than my current Turbulent X drivers. Fleasbaby and I have talked about this as well, and it seems the enclosure of the Magnum X drivers has a dramatic effect on the sound. Mine are housed in Vibro Classic Cups, and I can say with certainty that these are less warm sounding than the SR125i I heard. The bass quantity is SR60i-like. They also magnify sibilance more so than any Grados I've owned or heard.

I haven't heard or tried them in any other housing, but it seems mine sound quite a bit different from most other people's Magnum X's.

Compared to my SR325i I always felt like the Magnums were a hint darker and a lot more neutral.

Make sure you try TTVJ flat pads if you want a shift toward bass for any Grados.
