Grado modders go Magnum - Page 8

Why is everyone talking about the Magnum drivers as matching the RS2 or besting them.  As dleblanc343 has posted, the Magnum drivers are more on the HD800 and LCD-2 level of refinement.  I believe, at the point where Ryhdon is at with his version 4 Magnums, it excels over all the Grados, midfi (RS2, HF-2, PS500, RS1) and hifi (GS1000 & PS1000).

And that's what's gotten me really interested. If I can get something that sounds like something in the 1200$ range for a maximum investment of 400-500$; there's no doubt in my mind that Rhydon's made something very very nice.

It wouldn't make any sense to compare Magnum drivers to LCD-2/HD800/HE5/6 since they have very different sound signatures.

Hd800's have a very different sound sig than LCD-2's as well. I'm just saying that magnum are more on the hi-fi scale. Yes, I can compare a headphone to another; because in this case, we're talking in terms of performance. I never mentioned sound signature

Comparing two drivers that don't sound the similar is like comparing apples to oranges. This thread is all about apples. I'm pretty sure the DIYers would rather know where the different Magnum versions stand in terms of sound signature/refinement in relation to other high end Grado driver. The only reason (I can think of) why anyone would write out such a vague comment like "hd800's and lcd2 rev2's are saying the magnums (built from 325/ms2) compete right up there in that class" is to generate unnecessary hype.

No. Even though HD800 and LCD-2 may have drastic different sound signatures, we can still refer to them in reference to imaging, clarity, speed, transparency and so on.

I don't see why you can't when talking about driver capability. The Magnums may sound different but they are still at the same level as those kinds of headphones. Sound signature may be different but you can compare their level of resolution to see how good or bad a headphone they are.

Not generating any hype; in fact, I've never tried the magnums (tried the other two though). I'm just going off of what some have said, some of who actually owned all 3. And please, reread what I said, because you clearly didn't get my last part. The sound is NOT comparable for all 3 phones, doesn't mean the quality of the drivers and performances of them aren't on par.

I'll never compare the Magnum against the HD-800 or the LCD-2.  However, I'll keep the Magnum driver in it's own category, keep it in my headphone cups and just enjoy the beauty that it offers to the music I like.  The Magnum is neither an apple, nor an orange ... but, just a beautiful sounding driver.  wink.gif

Thread Starter

For those who have heard them there is no doubt that the Magnum drivers perform excellently. This has been widely covered in the Magnum Upgrade thread. Now, this response to those drivers on the one hand and their availability as separate parts to use in purchased or self-crafted wood cups on the other hand have made me start this thread. Repeatedly people in the other thread have pointed out their interest in how the Magnums would sound in wood shells or hybrid setups. And this is exactly what Grado modders can offer. Wood cups and the enthusiasm and curiosity to tweak their phones in the search of an improvement.

As soon as people get the V4's we will surely have loads of impressions rolling in to give people who might be interested in an upgrade some welcome info to base their decision on. And there might be more people really enjoying their new Magnumized woodies and never regret they have taken the Magnum road. Like myself.

Anyone has experience pairing Grados with Little Dot 1+ ?

It's one of my favorite pairs!

If you can afford it though, the Hifiman EF2 is amazing with these!

Awesome!  Sounds good!  Meanwhile, I've finally seen some "movement" in my product / shipment tracking by CanadaPost.  Though, I'm a bit cynical as to whether I'll see them by the end of this week - or even Saturday, which our post office delivers mail on.  Worst case, will be next week.  Not such a bad thing, though - I have plenty of work ahead of me this weekend and may not have 100% of my attention to give to the Magnums.

Nightslayer, I think we're in business ....

Tracking information has indicated "International Item Has Left Canada" as of 10:06 a.m. this morning.

I don't think I've ever been so happy to see those words.  basshead.gif
