Audioengine a2 alternatives?

I am looking for smaller speakers since my desk space is extremely limited, I can setup 2 small speaker stands to accomodate slightly larger speakers but nothing bookshelf size. I heard some a2s and were not impressed at all, especially at $200. so anything else I should be looking at? must be somewhat small and powered...

What you didn't like of your A2's? the M-Audio AV40's are also small, and self powered.

I feel the A2s are actually quite decent at low volumes. It is when you dial into general listening levels that the midrange becomes far too forward and pronounced. All it needs is a filter that reaches into the low-mid frequencies to give it an edge. And higher and better dampening stands. Like yourself, I am searching for A2 alternatives, of which there seems little choice but to move up in size and price.

Hit a TA2020 for like $20-30 and $150-170 Infinity Primus P162? Or Polk M30IIs if they are on sale The TA2020 + Polk M30II could be nabbed at $100 - about half the asking price of those A2s...

The JBL Control 1 Pro are my favorite small speakers there sound quality is miles better than the a2's and there $82 a pair.

I'm getting a pair of airmotiv4s which I've read good reports of from RMAF. As an ortho/'stat user, this should hopefully satisfy my desire for lots of detail.

Thanks for the suggestion, I will be looking into these.

 

For the record I never owned the A2s but demoed them at a friends house. While they are certainly not bad, I felt the $200 price point was quite high for what they are. I did own AV-40s sometime ago but it had capacitor problems and was a pain to fix, plus no customer support from m-audio at all...
