Hi,
Here is possibly a silly question, but bear with me, please,
I usually listen to mostly opera and chamber music but also a bit of avantgarde jazz. I usually do this with my teenage amplifer from 25 years ago, a Technics SU-Z200 paired with a DACmagic processing lossless from computer or and old Sony CDplayer. Now there is a local deal on a Cambridge Audio 550A (I get the feeling they are discontinuing the series). I wonder if I should buy it.
However, and this is stupid, I know, I have not had access to my Technics for a while and will not have access to it for at least four months either. In my temporary apartment I listen to music directly from computer sound card to DT880 600ohm. Even my DACMagic is in the attic.
I find this irritating and am looking longingly at the 550A to end this computer soundcard madness, but my pockets are not so deep. Thus I feel I cannot justify buying it since I don't know if it also will be a step up against the Technics or if it is even maybe a step down?
The Technics is old, it has even been stowed away in the attic for years before I brought it back into the apartment. But I have not really been able to find fault with it. Having said that, my ears are not used to these kind of things, it is only very recently that I started to try to look into ways of improving sound quality at home. I have not compared the Technics to any other amplifiers either, or auditioned other amps in stores on their own.
My speakers are just as old, I plan to replace them no matter what with possibly Monitor Audio BX2 or B&W 686 (but that purchase is for next summer).
Is this a clear shot, or am I taking a risk if I go ahead and just buy the 550A?
Perhaps it is impossible to answer the question?
Thanks anyhow, for your input.
/D
