I hope this is the right place

Hey head-fi,

I'm pretty damn new to the world of hi-fi but I have managed to pick up a pair of ath-m50s for myself. Now I literally know nothing about hi-fi but I have heard that I can benefit from using a DAC? I was wondering how much of a difference it makes and if I could benefit from my father's receiver: an Onkyo TX-SR705?

Thank you!

My Onkyo TX-SR706B powers my 250-Ohm headphone just fine.

So the TX-SR705 should power the ATH-M50 just fine,

if that was the question your asking?

Pretty much. Is there a noticeable difference, or not until I'm educated/have my ears trained for such difference?

and do I just go ahead and plug my headphones in or is there any other kind of work to be had before I try it out?

I use to use a Muse 6922EH single tube headphone amplifier hooked up to my TX-SR706B to power the 250-Ohm cans.

But I went back to plugging the 250-Ohm cans (headphones) straight into the TX-SR706B.

I found I was happy enough hooking the cans straight into the TX-SR706B, that I stopped using the Muse 6922EH.

If you were will to spend over $150 for a headphone amplifier, that might make it worth buying.

Now if you just want to try a tube headphone amplifier,

on eBay they sell single tube headphone amplifiers starting at $50.

But, also the ATH-M50 might not improve that much with a headphone amplifier anyway.

I believe the ATH-M50 usually works decently with any source.
