James cotton. 'deep in the blues' album.
Audiophile quality. Verve records.
Just his old ragged and gravelly vocal, some harmonica, some stand up bass here and there, and some acoustic guitar here and there.
But mostly that haunting vocal.

Ok, that's just ... brilliant!

Tom Waits gets my vote too - Tom Traubert's Blues - it may not be Waits at his most oxidized but it's one of my favourites.

Does Rusty Iron count?

I truly love Tom Waits -- I have every piece of recorded music he's made -- a goodly portion of it on vinyl.  While he is pretty much the ultimate in a gravel/whiskey male voice, little of his repertoire is blues, per-se.   But, God, he is so good. I think John Lee Hooker gets there on certain recordings, ditto with Freddie King.  Janis for sure, when she was still singing blues -- talk about rust.  Fact is, there are a ton of contemporary guys most people haven't ever heard of who are recording on Fat Possum Records who fit the bill in spades...R.L. Burnside, Junior Kimbrough, T-Model Ford, Cedell Davis, etc.  You want to go old?  Blind Lemon Jefferson, Son House, Robert Johnson...

Oh, another vote for Tom Waits. He isn't strictly blues, but who cares?

One of my absolute favourites - Joe Bonamassa - "Mountain Time" (Live From the Albert Hall)

And if you liked that one ..... same concert - this time Clapton & Bonamassa

Magic?

Be sure to check both Terry Evans and Hans Theessink - pure audiophile quality blues music all the way and two fabulous voices. For me this is magic.
