Sony MDR-150 + SFI drivers = cheap and awesome - Page 2

weird, I just went on my ebay purchase history, clicked on the link and it displayed "29 items left"... Going through ebay.de seems to work : http://www.ebay.de/itm/SAWAFUJI-MINI-RIBBON-TWEETER-Bandchen-PAAR-/260522010715?pt=Lautsprecher_Selbstbau&hash=item3ca852685b

Yah, .de and .uk work... .com, .au, .anything else - don't seem to.

Thanks for the link and heads up. Not sure I need yet another project, but at this price, I might grab a pair just to have on hand.

These might be the folks I messaged earlier this year trying to cop. I was told they couldn't or wouldn't ship to the US, and I remember not fully understanding why (export tax? customs? anyone?). If someone has a way of getting them here, please consider ordering a pair or two extra in either 32ohm or 120ohm flavors; I'm good for it.

There's this one guy, based in the US :

http://cgi.ebay.com/SFI-BIPOLE-RIBBON-TWEETER-S-4PC-SETS-EMIT-R-TYPE-32ohm-/370486794280?pt=Speakers_Subwoofers&hash=item5642bbd828#ht_2767wt_916

I remember messaging him because he no longer had them listed, and by the time he answered and relisted the item, I already orderer from the German shop.

I hope I'll get some money soon, I want to try the 32ohm in addition to the 120 I already have.

@melka I would like to find some 32 ohm drivers as well.

So I've made a couple changes to the 'phones since my first post. You filled the baffles with epoxy so you don't have to seal the baffle with with blutak, yes?  And... vented the diaphragm??  My drivers are still in my electronics project bin and there's no way I'm opening that in front of the kids...

That's correct! A more permanent solution than using just blu tak. The drivers are stock otherwise. I'm not sure what you mean by venting the diaphragm?

This version also uses silver cabling beyersmile.png

How does it sound?

+1 on finding out what these new tweaks are doing for you.

I thought you might have punched a hole through the center, because I don't remember that being there.

You're still employing some blutak for mass damping?

It actually sounds very good! Before dampening, there was waaay too much bass, and the upper mids had a harsh peak that made them almost unlistenable.

Looking for remedies, I cut open a black ink cartridge. Some of the larger cartridges have micro-cell sponges, which is a great dampening material to use in this case. About a 1/4" thick rough circle of dampening sits flush between the rear of the driver and the outer grille. This helped out!! Tons. but there was still too much upper mid.

The headphones stayed unused for about a month. Then I read somewhere in the Fostex T50RP thread about putting foam/toilet paper behind the earpads to change the distance between the driver and the ear.

I cut up part of a memory foam pillow, and used a couple bits behind the white ear circle pads. IT WORKED!!! Sound is more neutral than before. The bass is definitely present, mids are pretty close to being natural sounding, and highs are slightly recessed, but HF detail is still noticeable.

Compared to my modded T50rp's, the mids are more present in the SFIphones, but the T50 is still more natural sounding.

On the blu-tak vs epoxy mounting, I do believe the blutak was absorbing some resonances that I don't remember with my current revision of these headphones.

Any suggestions where to add blu tak for more dampening?

The hole in the center was there before. I believe it connects the coils together on either side of the ribbon diaphragm.
