Fiio e6 with an ipod?

Hi,

So I just purchased an e6 for my 5th gen ipod classic and was wondering what is the purpose of using the ipod usb connector (the Fiio L1, L3, and L3 cables) rather than the 3.5 headphone connector that it comes with. Does it make a difference in sound? Spending another 10$ on a cable, which btw is almost half of the price of the e6, seems a bit extreme.

On another note, does anyone know the difference between the L1 and L3 cables?

Using an ipod 30 pin connector bypasses the ipod amp. It is a cleaner signal and that is the main reason to consider an amp for an ipod.
