Best Desktop DAC/Amp for Denon D2000?

Thread Starter

Hi all,

Just got into audio in a serious way after recently receiving my ATH-AD700's and Asus Xonar DX (Hence my first post). Now I'm looking to explore it a bit more on the higher end, and am going to be picking up a pair of Denon D2000's soon and I understand that they basically require a DAC/Amp. So what do you guys consider to be the best?

I'm thinking either:

1. Nuforce Icon 2

2. E7/E9 Combo

3. Your opinion here

Also while I've got you here what do you all think of the Markl mods on these, considering the $139 pricetag?

Thanks all.

Many people recommend the Matrix M-Stage - there are plenty of users on the forum who discuss the issue; try checking out http://www.head-fi.org/t/475618/matrix-m-stage-amp-review-simple-cheap-and-excellent. HeadphoneAddict also recommends the uDac-1 as it brings up the d2000's slightly recessed mids as well. I personally use this setup and find it a very nice sounding great bang for the buck combination.

I really liked my LDI+ with the D2000s

I'd give that a shot.

The Dac is up to you though.  It all depends on what you like.

Tubes will ( in a very simplified explanation) generally bring out the recessed mids. I wouldn't really recommend the E7+E9 for the Denons.

Just the E7 itself did wonders for my D2000s compared to using the headphone out jack of my Alienware M15x.  The soundstage is a bit bigger, bass is tighter, and general sound quality is noticeably improved.

Watch out for the output impedance of the amp as the D2000s have fairly low impedance.
