I love DIY audio, and i've been thinking about this for a while; can i make myself an amp like i am describing above? and i'd only need an aux input.

And about how much would it cost?me

(Volume, and treble/bass adj. knobs would be great)

I also want to do the same but in a dual deck car stereo, car battery supply would be the only difference.

After looking at many scematics i like this the most. http://electronics-diy.com/lm4780-gainclone-amplifier.php

one resource is http://www.diyaudio.com/

but it is a hobby - not a source of cheap amplifiers - you can buy mass produced consumer amps for less, sometimes less than 1/2 the price a hobbyist can buy the individual parts for

Volume knobs would belong in the input, you could even use a headphone amp for pre-amp volume control.  Tube pre would give it that tubey sound.

150 watts into what load? It will be difficult into a headphone load, which are typically 50 ohms or higher, lots of amps will do it into speaker loads of 8 ohms or less. AMB's beta 24 will put 170 watts into an 8 ohm load. I think most chip amps like the gain clone will do similar.

Nobody should ever build 4-channel amps.

If you need/want a balanced amplifier 2-channel balanced amps are a zillion times better, if not more.

About how much would a 2 channel 150w rms into 8 ohm, cost to make?

2 channel balanced amps are moar better then 4 channel amps because the signals "in" each phase are locked together better. The parts that handle each phase work together, and look at eachother to see what the other one is doing. This is in contrast to a 4-channel amp where the parts handling signal in each phase are free to do whatever they want, without regard for whats going on in the other channel.

On that note, I have heard quite a few VERY VERY nice 4-channel amps. I just think there is a better way, despite the fact that so few amps employ it.

When you consider casing, you'd probably save money buying a used Adcom. If you want some DIY with that, replace the filter caps in the power supply.

You can try, but the bigger the amp the bigger the chance you will run into problems.

Go with a small amp to start with or at least get a kit with a good rep that has been built by a lot of people.

Take a look at 41Hz.com
