The _______-Fi You never saw coming...

So I think it's safe to say that almost everyone here has interests and hobbies other than Head-Fi. I've seen posts galore, and threads, on a myriad of different hobbies that people here have gotten into - watches, knives, pets, shoes, cars, motorcycles, R/C, video equipment, etc. I myself, personally, spend more time these days with Watch-Fi and R/C-Fi than Head-Fi, but also occasionally find myself coming back to Knife-Fi and Book-Fi. But every now and then, I find myself caught up in a collection that I never intended to start, but somehow just seem to allow to grow until it finally does come to my attention. Case in Point:

I work for oil companies as a field engineer up on the Alaskan North Slope. It's a job that often involves spending time outside in freezing cold, working with heavy equipment and tools, narrow, confined spaces, slippery coatings, high temperature, industrial fluids, metal shavings, etc. As a result gloves are mandatory for use for almost all tasks performed outside of an office space. Even though companies usually get gloves issued to them by their company, one of the best ways to get on a guys good side up here is to provide him a free, new pair of interesting gloves.

One of the engineers I work with has to have special size gloves provided for her because of her small hands, but our company often sends her gloves that are too small. I'm easily a foot or more taller than her, but my hands are only a little larger than hers so she gave me one of the pairs that was sent up for her, and it fit perfectly so I brought it home since I already have a pair I like at work. Went to toss it into my closet here at home, and what tumbled out?

Overview.JPG

Yep - Over 4.5 years of working in the field, I've managed to accumulate 13 pairs of different work gloves (Not counting those that I've used and worn out in the field, and the 3 different pairs I am currently using in the field right now)

Clearly the collection has gotten somewhat out of hand. The big problem is I wear out gloves at work and here at home a lot slower than I bring in new free pairs. I've got the three pairs I use up on the slope right now (ProFlex Titanium Impact Gloves, ArcticFlex Insulated Winter Glove and a cheap pair of Kevlar Gloves) as well as 2 sets of gloves I use here at home for work (Insulated in the winter, non insulated in the summer). Every few months, I even give away gloves to family and friends here at home, and use some to barter favors/goodies at work. Needless to say, I've definitely been somewhat blind-sided by the sudden onset of this new collection -- Glove-Fi bigsmile_face.gif

So anyone else have anything that they never intended to collect, and somehow, seem to have collected more of than they can ever use/need/appreciate?

What do you estimate your collection at for insurance purposes? tongue.gif

Haha! I could only imagine the look on an insurer's face if I ever told him that my entire collection of modern work gloves went up in smoke...tongue_smile.gif Incidetally, I never thought much about getting them as freebies until I started looking at the prices of them in stores and was surprised by the amount of coin stores can make selling them!

Well, Cat-Fi started about a year ago when Mai Tai showed up. At least she was free. So was Birdie, who moved inside last month.

And I have an entourage of three ferals who follow me around outside. I feed and water them. They're not socialized enough to be pets, unfortunately. Unlike the other two who, apparently, think they've acquired human DNA.

Food isn't too bad. Maybe $30-$40 a month and $10 on litter. And all of them are healthy.

So, a pretty inexpensive hobby and lots of fun.

I'd like to have a cat around, but knowing my dog, he'll make the cat's life miserable :(

I knew someone who collected road bike team bike race cloths. At first you would think it is nothing until you start to understand the whole concept. They don't just make the shirt tops, there are the cycle pants that are of limited production number also sometimes socks and gloves. These are made in France and Italy and need to be imported to the US at times. The stuff made is actually used as marketing for the companies which pay to sponsor the team.

Sometimes one store will have part of the cloths and another store in a different part of the world will have the matching piece. Remember it's cloths so not only do they have to match but they must be the correct size too.

OK, but I didn't exactly have a choice. Mai Tai snuggled up immediately then made it very clear that I had no option than to care for her. Birdie took a little longer to warm up, but she drapes herself over my lap and puts her head into my hand before falling asleep.

Look, I didn't ask for any of this. I had no idea that a bed was supposed to be shared with cats. I'm just going along with what they want. biggrin.gif

A few odd hobbies I dabble/used to dabble in:

  • Modding arcade sticks.
  • Hoarding books.
  • UI mods (Windows and Ubuntu/Gnome).
  • Building/Perfecting my home media center.
  • Baby-tier around-the-house DIY.
  • Console hacking/homebrew.
  • Being an ass on the internet.

If I had the money, I'd be keen to get into Fashion and Cooking a bit more, too.

I was thinking about starting shampoo-fi.  Not because I collect shampoo or anything (I swear) but because I need to moisturize!

Ojon is the only shampoo that I have tried that works for my hair. I've tried at least 20 different brands/kinds and none of them work like Ojon.

My hair develops grease quickly (it runs in the family) so I had to find something that would cut through it all. Still takes 3 washes to get it all out with this stuff after only a day. Ugh.

EDIT: Really hoping my mother sends a new bottle for Christmas as I'm close to running out and it's almost 100 USD for a large bottle...

Great, now the next time I need to buy shampoo I'm going to look for Ojon because someone on Head-fi recommended it smily_headphones1.gif.

I'm waiting for Fe-Fi-Fo-Fum-Fi.

Maps. Ran a quick search and found no map-fi.

Started as a youngster when I'd get them out of National Geographic. Over time I've had people, especially elderly people, graciously add their collections to mine. Of course now my collection spans a significant amount of time and includes city, state, region, nation, and world maps.

Paper maps are cool because they're so last-century. Most people just use the internet nowadays.
