HD650s to Compliment my D7000s?

Thread Starter

I've had my D7000s for about 2 years now, and I'm in the mood for a change.  Prior to owning the D7000s, I tried the HD650s, but didn't care for them.  For some reason, I'm having this crazy urge to try them again.  I know that HD650s won't be superior to the D7000s, so I'm wondering why I can't shake this urge.

Does this sound crazy to any of you, and would you recommend it?

Thanks

lol and i wanna buy some d7000s or maybe lcd-2 in the future.

hmmm it would be silly for u to get hd 650s when u have the better d7000s, but i'm sure they still are different and the hd 650 still compete pretty well for their price range, remember, they where sennheiser's flagship at one point.

Well, I found the HD650 superior to the D7000, so there.

I have both , i can surely said that, in over all the 7000 is much better than the HD650 .

^ Different tastes I guess. I found the D7000 too strident and the bass too messy.

True, the D7000s can sound slightly bright at times, but it hasn't bothered me to a great extent.  I don't think I'd describe the bass as "messy."  It could also depend on what you're driving them with.  I'm looking for a nice open can to compliment these closed ones.  The 650's may fit the bill, but at the same time I may end up getting them and realizing that it was a waste of money.

I could try to upgrade to something like an LCD-2, but I'm also afraid I'd get the LCD-2 and not want to part with the D7000's to pay off the LCD-2s, then I'm way in the hole...

If you find the midrange lacking in the D7000 then I wouldn't be adverse to giving the HD650s a go.

That's interesting. I thought the mids were supposed to be one of the 650s strong points.

What are the alternatives? Would it be worth considering the LCD 2s?

DT880 sounds decent on the GCPH, I bet the Sony SA5000s would also pair really nice but haven't heard the combo. Both the LCD-2 and HD650 would be considered warm, I would look for something cold/analytical or closer to neutral.

Interesting.  I tried the DT990 250's at one point, and did not care for those at all.  They were the last pair I tired before taking the plunge with the D7000s.  I think I may be kidding myself if I think a significantly cheaper pair of cans like the 650's will quench my "upgrade thirst".  Listening to the D7000s now, overall, these are some pretty damn good cans.  Maybe I should stop fooling around and go for some LCD-2s...lol

You mean you thought the mids of the D7000's were equal to that of the HD650s?

Who said the HD650 isn't superior to the D7000?

If you read what he said, he actually means that if you find the D7000's midrange lacking, then the HD650 is a good choice to cover upf or that fault of the D7000's.

And you would both be correct, as the mids of the HD650 are better than the D7000's IMO, it's one of the HD650's strengths. HD650 sounds very similar to the LCD2 R1 which had really, really good mids.

You should quit the habit of judging gear by price range. That's why this hobby creates so many snake-oil vulnerable people, we think higher price = higher quality.

The D7000 is like twice the price of the HD650 but frankly I find the HD650 better.

He thinks more $$ equals better, I think most people do. On the other hand I think most open headphone beat closed phones if you're looking for something other than a bass-head phone.

OP, have you considered the AD2000? Costs quite a bit with the import fees...
