CanJam@RMAF 2011 Listening Impressions Thread - Page 39

That's what Maxvla said when I asked. If Craig was, in fact, using 300Bs, that changes everything...

Actually, hang on... let me look at the picture that was posted and see if I can tell.

Edit: They are KR-PX4

1-The BA was using generic Chinese 300Bs, not PX4KRs.  The driver was the 6F8G I thought it was but Raytheon, had Hytrons on the brain since I just bought some.

2-The Super7 was using the older prototype transformers not the new ones.  The new transformers were used in the 2A3.  They will be basically the same for the Super7 as in the 2A3.

3-The Electra is largely complete and has been undergoing further refinements so it's actually further along than I suspected.  He's just dialing it in and didn't feel it was ready for mass exposure.

4-Super 7 will be $1300 for preorders already made from the prior meets and any new orders by the end of the month and go up after.  Somewhere between $1600-$1800.

5-Electra is $2200.

6-EC might be making a 300B amp exclusively for Jaben.

any idea if the final production of super 7 will be using pcb or all point to point?

You are right.  Edited accordingly.  Somebody must have brought them over and lent them to him through out the course of the meet.  Craig doesn't have any PX4KRs currently and didn't bring any.  We were just at his place and asked him directly.  Perhaps a momentary lapse.

It's PCB.  He said the price of doing point to point on 7 tubes would have been quite different and he wanted a quality entry level priced amp.

Yeah was weird, he probably was thinking about what he brought when we asked him.  It happens.  He definitely doesn't have any PX4KRs so they came from someone else.

For double the price of the LCD-2's, the LCD-3's would cost more than a pair of magnepan 1.7's in the US (you guys are so lucky to have that price). I know it's not fair to compare headphones with speakers... but maggies!

I would take the LCD3s over 1.7s given I am an apartment dweller and the 1.7s really require space to breathe to sound great as well as a spectacular amp.

I've heard them with a rouge el34 amp sound utterly mediocre but 1.6s sound fantastic in a Conrad Johnson set up.

I am with JP..at least on the 1.7 impressions. the 1.7s are so so..

But man i wouldn't give up the 1.6s for any headphone and my room isn't too big..probably about 200 sq ft..as noted by JP amp make a HUGE difference when drving these. A mark and Levinson was average..A plinius just transformed the seuip.

All that said, i don't quite know if the LCD_3 would be up to the mark, given that i'd take my speakers any day over a O2 + BHSE setup.

Yeah, I'm in an apartment too, and it is true that the magnepans need a lot of space and good amplifying. They also may sound a bit too harsh on the treble. That aside, I'd harbour a guess that a good number would spend more than a grand to amp their LCD-3's, for the sake of doing it justice.

The Maggies have crossovers, LCD3's do not. The overall sound quality and bass will be higher on the LCD3's.

I don't know about that argument.  There's heaps of crossover-less headphones that sound way worse than cheap speakers with crossovers.

I agree. But the LCD3's do not sound that bad.

Yeah I just don't think crossovers are that big a deal, especially compared to the glaring problems that headphones have, a crossover wouldn't have a negative impact.  But the bass surely will be better than the Maggies wink.gif

Yes, I did.

In last June Detroit's meet I listen to the DS with my HE-6 and I was sold so when Ray open the pre-order I immediately put myself in the list. I was a little bit concerned about the matching of its high power with other more efficient headphones.

My objective in this CanJam was to listen to DS with other headphones that are among my collection. I tried it with the HD800 in the low gain position. The sound was great! Very full, expansive and detailed. The background was very black. I really enjoy it. My concerns were completely dissipated and my Rudistor RP010B is now gone to open the space for the DS.

According to Ray he was expecting to get the chassis in 5 to 7 days. The boards are already assembled so as soon as the chassis are in is just a matter of assemble them and let them burn-in for 5 days to ship the DS out. Hopefully I will get mine within the next week and a half.
