(problems) Questions about AT AD700

Hi,

SO, I just got AT AD700's as my first open headphones. I thought they dont really need an amplifier because of the low power but I plugged these into my laptop and I can BARELY hear anything (the weird thing is that usually when I put anything in the headphone jack of my laptop, there is no sound from laptop speakers but when I plug these in the attenuation is very little).

Does this mean there is something wrong with the connector, headphones or is this how it is?

Thanks

Just realized I posted in the amp section, sorry.

How do I move the thread?

Your laptop should drive the AD700's just fine.  To check the connector try plugging your AD700's into an ipod or other audio device like a CD player through a home stereo receive/amp.  If you notice the same problem then you know there is something up with your headphones.  Because of how the connector is designed it is possible, however improbable, that is not fully seating into the jack on your laptop.  This happens more commonly with portable devices that have cases and the case interferes with the connector keeping it from connecting to the tip, ring, or sleeve.

Did you buy the headphones new?  How exactly are you plugging them in?  Are you using an adapter or just removing the 1/4 inch plug that comes with the AD700 and running the 1/8th connector straight into the headphone jack?  Have you plugged another set of headphones into the jack on your laptop making sure that it is ok?

Get back to use after you have tested those things and we can help from there.

I took out my old thinkpad and that works fine [speaker sound dies when I plug it in and I get pretty good sound out of it]

Putting it on my Piano or the receiver still isnt that loud. The Piano I can understand but pushing it into the receiver should give me good sound.

Dont really get it, I dont really have any music players to plug it into [I'm anti-apple or rather how apple sells their products] and I cant find my zune.

Atleas they are working off my thinkpad, so I'll order a cowon x7 and see how they fare with that.

As of right now with thinkpad and my flacs they sound very good[very mellow].

Well I guess you can make sure your sound settings are correct on your PC too.  If you limit the volume there your headphones are not going to get very loud.  Be sure to double check your Master Volumes.

Control Panel

Sound and Audio Devices

Volume

Make sure all of the volumes are turned up to full

It does seem that the jack on your laptop may be the culprit.  When you get a chance try it on another computer and eliminate the headphone jack on the headohones.

Best of luck
