Exactly.

Would be happy to live with the -X's if I didn't know the -3F's existed, but alas I do!

Exactly right. Professionally I have a lot to do with measurement systems. On this forum we talk as if all our 'measurements' (listening experiences) are obtained under exactly the same conditions - same equipment, same hearing capabilities, same musical preferences, same vocabulary for describing what we hear and with the same calibration of that vocabulary - with only one variable changed (e.g. 3C versus 3F). The reality is they are not the same conditions and thus the 'measurements' are not directly comparable at all.

Fortunately, this doesn't mean there's no point talking. However it does put us in a fuzzy, statistical world where a subtle consensus or agreement one way or another might have a germ of truth to it, all things being equal. It also means a lot of room for debate without any substance behind it., e.g. two people disagree when ironically they might be 'hearing the same thing' and vice versa.

(Btw, one of the things that doesn't make 'all things equal' is when the consensus is the product of a FOTM or FOTY effect eek.gif)

....
Now the real problem is that there are so many complexities to deal with beyond this in our systems, specifically source and amplification equipment and cables that it is very hard to know what the real reasons for our preferences across Head-Fi members.

Luckily we have these great stores here (A2A/Tivoli) that lets you listen to a lot of the stuff they sell. So I can listen to everything and then buy the thing I like best so it doesn't matter what other people like or think. You can bring your own music and test away all day if you want. Only problem is sometimes I leave a lot poorer.

Thumbs up for Melbourne's A2A and Tivoli. My two favourite places.
