Also regarding the ergonomics of the SD V3's, if I wasn't using such an ergonomically challenging headphone the cables might bother me a bit, but with a pound of LCD-3's on my head its not like I'm moving around much anyway!

Yeah, I kind of thought that too actually, if you are committed to wearing a boat anchor on your head does it matter if the chain is a little lighter?

I kid, the ergonomics aren't that bad, at least they don't seem that bad until I put on my Alpha Dogs...

How is the sound of the LCD-3F vs. Alpha? The LCD-3 seems like the ideal successor and open headphone compliment to my closed cans. It's just a lot of money and that kind of money could be spent going in the electrostatic direction of the Stax lineup.

I own both the lcd-3f and the alpha dog and the alpha dog surprisingly holds it's ground against the lcd-3, though it's clear the lcd-3 is still a much better headphone but not as much as the price would have u think

I am of the opposite opinion.  I have both and the hands down winner is the LCD3(f).  The Alpha Dogs are much more neutral and lack the warmth of the LCD3's, in addition to lacking the sound stage the LCD3's bring to the table.  No doubt they are very good headphones but they are closed back and sound exactly as such.

I did say the lcd-3 was clearly the better headphone, just saying it's not 3 times better as the price may indicate. I agree though better bass, bigger soundstage, more detail retrieval, better tone and body - it wins on all counts except for comfort and value IMO

Anyone here have personal experience with the LCD-XC versus the Alpha Dog?

I totally read it like goldendarko thought the lcd-3f was clearly the better headphone, but that the alpha dog is surpricely good for the price.

No worries, and no offense intended, just that we differ in our opinions.  I feel maybe the LCD2 could be a comparison to the AD's but from listening with my setup, comparing them to the LCD3, it's more like comparing a VW Passat to a Ferrari Enzo.

The Passat is a very comfortable ride and does what it should do, but the Ferrari is going to make your butt pucker and suck you into the ride.

Side note, finally got my graph today for my LCD3's.

Awww come on. None of the Audezes are going to be a Passat. We're all talking about high end headphones. The headphone equivalent of a Passat would be the HD580 or the likes. I have both the LCD2 and 3 and I listen to the 2s more than the 3s. The ADs and the LCD2 are very very good headphones.

It's like a C63 AMG to an SL63 Gullwing. They're both up there and I know one goes faster than the other. Doesn't necessarily mean I want to drive the faster on all the time. Sometimes, I just want to have the seat a little higher than a few inches of the gravel and enjoy the ride.

Passat ain't all bad, does have the Audi chassis, but I was more comparing the AD's to the Passat and the LCD3's to the Ferrari.  Actually, I would liken them more to an Aston Martin, they aren't as in your face and mid-life crisis like the Ferrari.  The Abyss would be a...H1 Hummer?

My response is similar to the others, the LCD-3F is clearly the better headphone in pretty much all aspects when they are compared side by side. I really like the Alpha Dog a lot though. It sounds great and is the more neutral sounding of the two. The AD sounds a bit grainy, small, and tinny when directly compared to the LCD-3. The only areas where I find the AD to be superior are isolation (obviously) and comfort. I have had the LCD-3F for about 3 months now and I am still just as knocked out by it as I was when I first got it. The LCD-3 manages to be both higher resolution and smoother than the alpha dog, which is a pretty neat trick because the AD is really good. The LCD-3 just operates on a higher plane of refinement.

Again, I'm not knocking the Alpha Dog. I think it is pretty amazing for what it is. To be honest though, the only reason I keep it is to have a sealed can for isolation.
