like people said, they might just be a studio series with the current series and their sound signature being different. now  they could potentially have similar performance to LCD-3 technically wise, no wood, only a few hundred dollars cheaper, and 2 years now, im sure advances in planar technology have arrived and what cost alot before is cheaper now. so that could also be a reason for the pricing.

now, i too would hate if they competed with the HE-6. since right now hifiman has their own sound, and audeze has their own, trying to change might be a bad thing. kinda like grado with their "flagship" ps1000 :D

i'd be expecting a neutral audeze, but still maintaining most of the character of the current ones, slightly dark, fuller bodied, etc.. in a perfect world, they'd be like LCD-3, but with the bass quantity of the LCD-2, and a little less creamy but still dark and smooth.

I would love it if they competed with the he6....maybe hifiman will get off their asses and improve the he6 efficiency...driving headphones from speaker amp is ridiculous in my opinion.

Stax did that and there's no problem with it. The SR007 MK1 and SR009 are anything but similar sounding in signature, and they are both top dogs.

I am excited if Audeze got around to improve some of the shortcomings of the LCD-3s compared to other top flights, mainly soundstaging, imaging and gain more transparency.

LOL @ pic M-13.

Hard to imagine more transparency for the LCD3.... it might already be the most transparent headphone on the market now.

It's always like that until "better" comes along. In terms of current market: Stax (without a doubt imo), and I will let someone else comment on whether HD800s are or aren't more transparent. :)

Maybe it is, maybe it isn't (as I haven't tried all the flagships), but for me personally it's still not enough at standalone. I think Audeze can and SHOULD push the bar further.

Feel the same way about my recent ciem purchase. Right after I get it, there's suddenly a new jh audio flagship announced...

Flagship? 12 drivers smells more like product for the sake of product.  I'm sure someone will buy it but let's consider a speaker with 12 drivers... interested or facepalm?
