Hi Guys, I'm new to this thread but have recently purchased a used pair of LCD3's from a another Head-Fi member in Europe, I'm UK based. There was a lot of reading and considering went on before I took the plunge and made the purchase, used they might be but they were still expensive. Initially I thought wow what a full on sound but then the more I listened the less I enjoyed them, I thought the top was dull and lacked clarity, very recessed, they lacked pizazz, a bit like a door needed opening to let the rest of the sound out. They are of Feb 12 vintage with a 231 S/N, I sure hope that this is the veil that has been discussed and not the house sound as it's not for me. I have mailed Audeze and as everyone says they have been very helpfull so I have RMA'd them back to the States at a cost of $141, no small fee! I'll post the outcome.

I'm not sure what the 'veiled' sound is....mine are from Dec 2012 and I don't experience any dullness or lack of clarity. The official date of the update of before and after 'veiled' is before mine. I hope yours is an abnormality and Audeze finds something to correct so you can enjoy them.

Note how Audeze again is working no-questions-asked on a pair for a non-original-owner.
What a superb company I think. I have myself always had great service from them (I have always bought new from them)
and they will get my business in the future I'm sure.

True. Holy crap, I just realized that the newer closed back model will be coming out. The closed Audeze vs. TH-900 is going to be interesting.

I'll consider them if they can meet at least one of these criteria:

1) More comfortable than the LCD-2/3 or less weight
2) Easy on amp. The Denon/Fostex can sound great out of Macbooks and iPad/Ipod.
3) BASS!!! I love the LCD-3's bass most of the time, but at times you need that extra oomph (Also, LCD-2/3's sound in closed form is useless)
4) Air - The Hifiman's and Denon all have good air, while both Audeze's lack this.
5) Treble - don't know which part exactly to focus on off the top, but it has to be more appealing.

I can almost guarantee you will get none of your list... thankfully :p

lol ikr, it'll never happen.

it'll have to be impressive, like fostex TH-900 bass, but with audeze slam and tightness, and with audeze midrange, must have same imaging/soundstage as TH-900 and maybe hifimanesque treble

Why would you not want a headphone being more comfy and/or easier/less selective to amp?

Sound wise, got no idea who will come out on top. But I'm putting my money on the TH-900 for the best looking closed headphone still. That red wood cup is just out of this world and they used real platinum for the fostex logo. Far out.

Early prototype photo of the closed wood cup LCD doesn't look promising. I think the LCD 2/3 looks better IMO

That's awesome. I've heard only excellent things about it's looks. Still have to see for myself. Also, is the design of the closed back already finalized?

I'll take that but it's just not going to happen.  Adding mass to make the cups closed isn't going to make them lighter and as far as orthos go, Audeze is already pretty easy on amps.  It's a tech thing, there are reasons orthos were dead for a long time.  In a world of 10mW headamps they just didn't work.  I fully expect the closed model to be an LCD-2 that is sealed with some sort of treatment to make them not sound quite like a closed headphone.  That's my expectation.  Just don't see Audeze building a closed LCD-3 killer and certainly not one that sounds like anything other than the Audeze house sound.  I could be wrong though.

Kinda how I figure it will play out too.

Top is LCD2 Bamboo (Closed). Mid is LCD3 Rose Wood (Closed). Bottom LCD3 (Open) Still prefer the look compared to the top 2.
