Advice please: Upgrade from my Ultrasones Pro900

Hi all,

I am currently using Ultrasone Pro900s for my home setup and am considering upgrading. Although, I like them in the main, I have always found the highs a bit too bright for me. Even with 100s of hours of use, I still cant quite get used to them.

Aside from that, I have a case of "upgraditis" and am looking for a new pair to wow me...which the 900s never really have done.

My main criteria is that they need to be closed as I tend to listen to music in the same room as my wife. It would be nice if the new pair are a bit more sound proofed from the outside world, as the 900s really dont isolate very well at all and I have to turn them up quite loud to drown out the TV.

Form posts I have read, it seems that my only choices really are, Denon and Audio Technica models - does anyone have any of these? What are the sound signatures, isolation like?

Are there any other makes\models I should consider?

I dont really have a budget as such, and will spend the money on a worthy upgrade.

Thanks in advance.

D7000s make a great upgrade from the 900s.

Though I still have my 900s and not the Denons because my home phones are open, and need something portable and closed.

Get a used Denon D5000 for the cost of the PRO900. Cost wise, it's a side-grade, equal trade. Sound wise, total upgrade in all departments. Nothing AudioTechnica offers will do what you're looking for (obviously you like a little more than neutral bass I assume). I have a D5K and the isolation is good, it's not a canceling phone or extreme isolation, but it's fine. At moderate volume, you can't hear it a few feet away and I can't hear all the fans and stuff while wearing them. I sold my PRO900's a while ago and went Denon D2000 and then jumped to D5000 and I'm satisfied with that point for closed-back headphones at that price level.

Very best,

Then I think maybe you can just reverse the numbers, get the 009 ^^

Denons and Audio Technicas have even worse isolation than your Pro 900. Their sound could be more to your liking though. If you want the best isolation full size headphones can give you, and aren't afraid to drop the cash, get some ED8's. They should have a similar sound signature as the Pro 900 but with a bit less bass and smoother treble.

Thanks for the ideas guys.

I will investigate the D5000 and D7000 further. It will be interesting to see if the difference between the D5 and D7 is enough to justify the higher price for the D7?

I will keep the ED8s in reserve, for when I am looking to spend some more money...although I will have to be convinced that the treble isnt as harsh as the 900s.

Cheers

Denon D5000 on amazon.de for 349 Euros tax included this week only. For everyone in Europe this price should erase all doubt :)

I ordered mine already :)

Cheers
