Want to ditch the pc and create a home setup. advice?

hey all, so i want to scrap the idea of having my computer be my listening station and want to get a decent home setup.  My main question is, what does the basic home setup consist of? cd player, reciever, amp?? I've tried going through the forums but all the pics of home setups can be intimidating with all those wires and boxes everywhere.

I currently listen to my music as apple lossless files on my computer with my akg k240 studios connected  to a fiio E7 amp/dac which is connected to my pc. Would i be using my amp/dac with stereo/reciever? All I need is some basic advice and i will continue the researching. thanks in advance for anyone willing to point me in the right direction.

Why don't you build yourself a nice media PC?  Here are some good links on how to get started.

There are a lot of nice CDP options depending upon your budget.  You can also get a perfectly fine turntable for $400-500ish if you plan on listening to vinyl.  It's hard to respond to your request without more context.  You don't even mention if you want to listen to headphones or speakers.

thanks for the info.  I'm planning on listening through my headphones which are currently the akg k240studios, but i would eventually like to upgrade to the beyerdynamics dt 880's.  Right now i only have a fiio e7 dac/amp that connects via usb to my computer.  I'm looking for something that i can set up next to my bed or lounge chair and just listen to music, hence the idea of a system.  I'm not really interested in speakers. I basically just need to find out what the basic setup consists of. If i can get that information i can continue researching and get a better idea of what i want.  I dont really want to keep listening from my computer.

Hmm, gotcha, so basically you want a nice stationary system to sit/lie down to and just enjoy music.

Since it sounds like you don't want to do that where your desktop computer is setup, my recommendation is that you have two options as your source:

- Notebook computer or iPad 2

- CD Player

If you have a CD Player, you don't need an external DAC since a good CDP will already have a nice DAC.  I don't use a CDP anymore so I can't point you in a specific direction, but there are a lot of excellent, used CD Players on Audiogon for sub-$1000.  You can get a great Arcam, Meridian, Marantz, Rega, etc., CDP.  Lots of threads you can pull up with a lot of good info with some Googling.

If you plan on using a notebook or iPad 2, you'll want an async USB DAC.  Good ones start at $300-450 such as the Musical Fidelity V-DAC II (make sure not to get the original one) and, presumably (reviews aren't out yet, so keep an eye on this one) the Schiit Bifrost with the USB upgrade.

You'll want a good amp after that.  If you want transparency, Headamp GS-1 is a great place to start.  I had a GS-1 for awhile and it handled everything I threw at it very gracefully.

GS-1 performs very well with most headphones, from the Grados to Senns.  You can get great performance from everything from a HD650 to a SR225i without breaking the bank.

It's a good decision if you have a satisfactory CD collection.  The quality brands have very good D/A implementations.  I also forgot to mention Cambridge Audio 740c and Jolida JD-100a.  Great players but not really to my personal taste.  If you can swing $1000 for a good CDP, it'll serve you well for a very long time, and if you take care of it, you can sell it and retain most of the resale value.  If you go cheap and spend too much time on these forums, you'll just be dissatisfied several months later, and end up wasting time and money upgrading to something you should've bought in the first place.

Any one of those CDPs above (Arcam, Meridian, Marantz, Rega) will be an excellent source, so you want to pair it with a good headphone amp.  Again, I'd highly recommend the Headamp GS-1 or try to find a good price on a used DIY beta-22 (3-channel).  That will give you an excellent foundation that the vast majority of headphones will perform well on.
