~$120 headphones

Thread Starter

I'm looking into buying a new pair of headphones for gaming + movies. The main thing that I'm looking for are sound and comfort. I don't care about aesthetics or anything of that nature. It can be the ugliest POS out there, but as long as they sound great and are comfortable, I don't mind.

I hear that the Sennheiser HD 555s and the Audio Technica AD700s are great, but they lack bass. This is something that will greatly suffer when watching movies. I don't mind open back cans. The thing that wards me away from closed cans are that they make my ears sweat. I had the Sennheiser PC 350s before and they were not something I wanted to wear for a few hours at a time.

If any of you can be of assistance then I would really appreciate it. Thanks

I can't find much on these headphones. Can you link me to some reputable reviews comparing this to other headphones?

The

Superlux HD 681

Awesome for the price.

Hmmm can anyone vouch for these headphones?

For $120 you can do a lot better than Superlux anything. I second the FA-011 recommendation. I'd also check out the KRK KNS 8400.

Those headphones seem like they would make me start sweating. I completely forgot about this thread. Could you please provide me with some good reviews of these particular headphones? I'm not very knowledgeable, but I do want to make an informed decision when I purchase.

Haha everybody is just dropping you 1 line and leaving, most have a better experience here but ill try to help you out here.
First thing first here, everyone has preference and most will argue for their headphone without ever hearing other phones. So what im going to do here is recommend you my preference.
The AKG K240 long used as studio monitors for there price/performance, of course they've changed over the years but they remain in the studio as you can see in the above icon im using. But your not looking for Studio Monitors, so ill go ahead and tell you why they might be right for you.
So lets start with your first need(want), sound, now the K240 have a sound that doesn't lean to much in any direction but does give off a warmer sound. Now you'll want a warmer sound for long listening sessions they allow you to listen and get into the movie without them screaming at you. The treble is alittle rolled off but not at all to the point that you'll miss anything at all. Now what the treble roll off does do is keep the sound from fatiguing your ears, meaning your ears will remain happy even after hours off use. They have nice smooth bass and again with the smooth mids. Just smooth overall, that would sum them up in one word.
Now to your comfort need(want) they happen to be light and with that, comforatable. They use an auto adjusting headband that is very flexible comforming to your head as solid headbands could not. The pads provide nice coushening that gets you forgetting that they are on your head. But they are normally* leather which might get warmer and possibly sweaty if you live a (much)warmer(hot) area. Which brings me to my next point.
They do come as a standard "K240 Studio" version and a "K240 MKII" version. The only difference being their accessories, the MKII come with an extra coiled cable and more importantly, velour pads, the velour pads should reduce any problems that might arise from the heat.

If you have any further inquiries please lay them upon me and will provide the best response time might allow me to provide.
Now the choice is purely up to you.

Very informative post. Thanks for your suggestion! I will definitely be looking into these. That extra $30 is a breaking point though. How are the AKGs vs the Sennheiser HD 555s? I would love some Beyerdynamics, but they are too pricey.

Heya,

Well, we could go on and on about a headphone, but there's already a plethora of threads about the models mentioned here. The search function will reveal a lot on that. Also, the website has a review section that is just articles of reviews. Have you even looked at it yet? I'm not trying to snippy or snobby about it, but a lot of us work on these articles/reviews so that people have that resource, without an endless empty thread of information with a lot of off-topic commentary mixed in. Know what I mean? If you cannot find what you're looking for via those two methods, I'll be happy to give you any information on the FA-011 that you want, with pictures.

Very best,

The Fischer recommendation, of course,  is a very good one.

But if your skittish about the lack of info available, here are some other thoughts:

First, I like the AKG K 240 recommendation.  A phone that's been around for a long time

and proven itself to a wide variety of people.

Second, I recently brought home the M Audio Studiophile M40 for some extended listening sessions.

In the end they were not "keepers" for me, but that was mostly because of their whomping big bottom.

But they're interesting phones; well made, with several strong points.

You can pick them up brand new for about 110.

3rd - I've also listened to the The KRK 8400, which are about the same price, but I think anyone with gaming in mind would want

more bass presence.

And 4th - I may get slammed for this one, but the Sony MDR-7506 is another solid headphone with a phenomenal track

record.  I don't know what they're going for these days - I'd guess about $90.  There's a good reason why they're

one of the top selling headphones made in the past 20 or so years, with at least one pair in any recording or broadcast

studio:  they sound pretty darn good on almost any kind of music.  Well made and (reasonably) portable too.

If you go with them,be sure to buy from a quality dealer because there are so many counterfeits around.

I think MalVeauX put it very well in his post above: "Well, we could go on and on about a headphone[...]"

I do not own a headphone amplifier. I heard that in order to properly drive the FA 011s, I would have to purchase one. I only have my Asus Xonar DS to power headphones. So I guess the FAs are out of the picture.

There are some very decent inexpensive amps available. ($60-120 range)

and, there are more than a few headphone recommendations in this thread.

You can also take a look at some of the "recommended headphone"

and "buying guide" lists by

price range that have been done by forum members

Here's one for starters: http://www.head-fi.org/a/buying-guide-headphones-by-price-range
