I finally get it

Decided this weekend to get into high-end headphones (I have a decent speaker set-up, but realized that the space I live in is just too difficult acoustically), but was skeptical that there was going to a big change when moving up from my un-amped Westones 4.

Now sitting at my desk with a pair of LCD-2s plugged into a DACmini I finally get it - what an awesome combo. Much better sound than I was ever able to get out of my speakers at a fraction of the cost.

Now how do I justify using this set-up at work....

Welcome to the headphone world and good luck on your journey.

Welcome aboard, and as the saying goes, "Sorry about your wallet." (Your ears clearly aren't sorry about anything, though!)

I know the feeling about audiophile talk at first...seems like a bunch of placebo and psychology, and a lot of it likely is, but the first time I got to hear some Stax in action, a lot of their claims and descriptions suddenly made sense, now that I knew precisely what my ears had been missing the whole time. All I know now is that it makes me want to listen to music, a feeling I never got with my prior headphones.

Does this LCD-2 setup give you that same feeling?

Absolutely. Listening to some pieces of music, it's as if I'm hearing them again for the first time. Simply astounding.

This forum was massively in helpful in sorting out all the buying options. It's funny, when I started looking I told myself I was going to keep it under $500, but oh well....

Welcome to the community, and as already stated - 'sorry about your wallet'.  I joined Head-Fi some 3 years ago, and here I am many hundreds of hours on site,  thousands of dollars poorer, but millions of decibels richer.  I've been down many of the audio 'roads' that you are about to embark on, having enjoyed every sonic minute.  Never thought that one could nor should spend more than $50 on a pair of headphones, then came the $100 limit, then the unimaginable $500 benchmark, and here I am now a few grand into my current setup and sonic bliss!  I still enjoy my many dynamic setups including the orthos LCD-2's that you are currently enjoying, and am still mesmerized with my AKG K-1000's.  Currently I'm an avid electrostatic junkie, and am now listening to a pair of Sennheiser HE 60's (Baby Orpheus) powered by a Cavalli eXStatA Hybrid amp.

Keep reading the threads here as they're loaded with information.  And you'll find that the members are extremely helpful and will go out of their way to provide advice and assistance.  In terms of purchasing 'new' equipment, I have generally stuck to the Head-Fi or Audigon forums as I know that the members are trustworthy, honest and fair.

Try to get out to some Headphone Meets if you can - a great way to try out equipment, make new 'audio' friends and share your interest.

Have fun on your journey my friend.
