Computer Speaker for College?

Thread Starter

Hi,

I'm looking for a 2.1 speaker set up for my college dorm. I listen to mostly trance, house and electro.

It'll be plugged in to my crappy laptop sound card.

I don't want it to be too heavy. 20 lbs and below

Budget - Below 150 USD

Couple of set ups i've looked at

Klipsch ProMedia 2.1

Altec Lansing v2621

Harman Kardon Sound Sticks

Cambridge Soundworks

Logitech Z-series

Is there anything else I should look at? any system to rave about?

Thanks in Advance!

I don't know much about speakers, but I am looking for computer spearers for about 180 bucks.

I'm now choosing between Swan M10 or the M Audio AV40. After reading speaker forums.

They're around 200 bucks in Australia, but in the US, they're about 130 bucks

I'd rather hit low cost bookshelf speakers with proper driver/tweeter for music duty so since u in the USA fish out a used stereo/power amp from Craiglist and Egg has Polk Monitors on sale all the time tongue_smile.gif

I have a relative in Sydney actually - electronics seem to be priced out of whack there but fortunately Microlab speakers are actually priced sweet tongue_smile.gif He nabbed a pair of Solo 6C and is pleased as punch for what he paid for 'em

Have a look at the 2.0 Solo 5C upwards or Finecone series if 2.1 Pity Australia does not carry the H-200 model (was my 1st choice for him hehe)

Wow, the first link looks nice, but because Im don know much about speakers, I don't want go to through all that amp business. Does the one in the first link have an internal amps??

And whats the difference between a speaker amp and a powerful headphone amp??

chewja, I wouldn't recommend Altec Lansing. I've been disappointed with their stuff. Also, realize that setup you mentioned, the 2621's has a sub, but the speaker has no protection. One good smack and that thing is history. That's one major reason why I don't like their stuff.

Klispsch ProMedia I've never tried...heard good things about them, but also they seem to have spotty reliability. I'm not even positive if they still manufacture them.

My last HK speaker set worked quite well for many years. It wasn't what you are looking at, but based on good experience from the past, I'd give them a try first. You can always return things if they aren't what you expected.

sulk, both examples trog linked to have internal amps. The specs sheets say so. That would mean you don't have to buy anything extra. Those speakers have on/off power switches.

Speaker amp is made to power speaker systems. Headphone amps are more inline with the power requirements of headphones. Its more complicated than that, but generally speaking, I wouldn't try and power speakers with a headphone amp. wink.gif

Yep these are active monitors/speakers with internal amp - u may want to buy a seperate USB DAC/Headphone Amp or if funds limited something like an Asus Xonar  DG to have a set up for both speakers and cans. Onboard mobo sound is doable but meh L3000.gif
